South Carolina Police Exams

Each police department may choose which exam they require you to take. Below is a list of departments that require different exams.

Charleston

Before you can join the Charleston Police Department, you need to pass a pre-employment written exam. This exam measures cognitive abilities that are necessary for effective performance as a police officer. The cognitive section includes problem solving, reading comprehension, math, and writing ability. You must receive a 70% or higher to advance in the hiring process.

Columbia

The Columbia Police Department requires you to pass the Nelson Denny Reading Test. The exam consists of two parts: a vocabulary section containing 80 questions and a reading comprehension section containing 38 questions.

Greenville

To join the Greenville Police Department, you must take an entry-level written test. The exam required is the National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory (NCJOSI) produced by IO Solutions. The NCJOSI test consists of the following elements: Problem-Solving Ability, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Writing Ability, and Personality Characteristics.

Myrtle Beach

The Myrtle Beach Police Department uses the National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST) for its applicant testing process. This test has four components: Arithmetic, Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Report Writing. After completing the NPOST, you will be required to write a 300-word essay on a topic presented to you on the day of the exam. The National Police Officer Selection Test is graded immediately after all test takers have completed the exam. The essay will be graded at a later time. You must pass the exam to continue on to the next phase of the process, which is the physical agility course
