Free Hogan Assessment Practice Test - HPI, HDS, MVPI, and HBRI

The first Hogan test sample on this page is the HPI test. This test is extremely common and is almost always given as a bundle with the HDS questionnaire when completing a Hogan assessment.

Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) Questions

Each of the HPI examples presents a statement, with which you have to rate your level of agreement - from strongly agree to strongly disagree.

Hogan Personality Inventory Sample #1:

I am able to wind down after a challenging day at my job.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Adjustment trait.

When answering this question, you should consider whether agreeing with the statement demonstrates a positive attribute towards the trait. In this case, the statement expresses calmness, which is a positive attribute of a leader or a general role. Therefore, the statement is positive when considering the Adjustment trait and should be answered as Strongly Agree or Agree.

Hogan Personality Inventory Sample #2:

When posed with challenging obstacles I am inclined to walk away.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Ambition trait.

Employers look closely at this personality trait. If you demonstrate extremely low ambition you might work well within a team, however, it can also be perceived as lacking self-confidence and assertiveness in carreer choices. On the other hand, a result with high ambition may show restlesness hat result in a desire to change roles often. This is why in this particular personality trait it is important to not score on any side of the extremes. These statements should be answered with Disagree or Agree

Hogan Personality Inventory Sample #3:

I always attempt to understand other people's opinions.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Interpersonal Sensitivity trait.

These statements aim to assess the degree to which you appear tactful, socially sensitive, and perceptive to others. High Interpersonal Sensitivity will often result in candidates who can easily relate to their peers and successfully practice teamwork.

Sample HPI Question #4:

Academically I was or am often at the top of my class.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Learning Approach trait.

Depending on the position you are applying for, the employer will look for different results for this personality trait. The statements in this category will gauge your preferences in different academic subjects such as mathematics, remembering information, and reading. Your desired results depend on the nature and focus of the job you are applying to.  Responding to extremes just because you believe the assessors are looking for it is never positive. Your prior research of the position and the company will be critical here.

Sample HPI Question #5:

I believe in doing something right, or not doing it at all.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Prudence trait.

These statements look to determine the degree to which you present a strong work ethic and can be a dependable part of the team. Most employers are looking for candidates how will show big signs of this personality trait. In this specific statement, it is recommended to answer Strongly Agree or Agree. Make sure to balance your responses associated with this personality trait so that employers can see you are answering honestly.

The HPI test focuses on your strengths and positive personality traits – those that are demonstrated when you perform at your best. It will present you with 206 statements, each correlating with a different personality trait. As you answer, consider how each statement relates to a specific trait and whether your answer reflects a positive or negative aspect of that trait. Based on your responses, each trait is scored on a scale. The ideal score for each trait might vary depending on the job you're applying for.

How to Ace Your HPI Test?

The best way to prepare for the HPI test is to follow the following steps:

1. Practice with sample HPI statements. This helps you understand the seven core traits measured: adjustment, ambition, sociability, interpersonal sensitivity, prudence, inquisitiveness, and learning approach.
2. Understand the "optimal range" for each trait. The HPI doesn't necessarily favor extreme scores. Instead, it seeks well-balanced responses that reflect positive aspects of each trait within a relevant range for the specific position you're applying for.
3. Aim for nuanced responses. While strong qualities are good, avoid portraying yourself as the absolute extreme of every positive trait. The HPI can identify inauthentic answers.

Additional HPI examples and more tips on how to choose the right answers and rank in the optimal range while avoiding extreme responses, are available in our full online Hogan Preparation Pack starting at 79$. It includes full simulations for the Hogan HPI and HDS tests, with job-specific feedback to help you improve your results by ranking within the optimal range.

The HPI test is a classic personality assessment where positive attributes support a strong employee or leader. However, what happens when you are assessed about negative or problematic traits, which, if scored over the optimal range, may imply derailing employees, that may cause more damage to the team than contribution? Continue to the HDS practice questions, which, in 168 questions, assess the dark side of personality – with much less “straightforward” attributes and responses.

Learn more about the different personality types with our PI Personality Types guide.

Hogan Development Survey (HDS) Questions

HDS Test questions are identical to the HPI in their format, only they assess qualities that might benefit you at times but risk performance in times of high stress.

Sounds complicated? It becomes much clearer once you go through the Hogan Development Survey free online test questions below.

HDS Question #6:

Most of the time, I do what my manager tells me to, despite my own opinions

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Dutiful trait.

Agreeing to this statement expresses an obedient, hierarchy-oriented, yet non-independent attitude, which is mostly negative for leadership roles while somewhat positive for general employees. Therefore, the correct answer for this statement will depend on the position you are applying to. Leaders should answer Strongly Disagree or Disagree, and general employees should answer Agree.

HDS Question #7:

Strict deadlines and fast-paced environments make me feel stressed and less productive.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

This statement assesses the Leisurely trait.

This statement reflects a preference for a more relaxed work style and a potential dislike for pressure. In this case, the statement expresses an easily irritated and stressed person, which is negative for leadership roles and general employees.

HDS Question #8:

I prefer to work independently and focus on my tasks rather than collaborating in large groups.

Strongly Disagree

Disagree

Agree

Strongly Agree

Answer #8: This statement assesses the Reserved trait.

This statement reflects a preference for solitude and a focus on individual work. It aligns with the "reserved" trait by suggesting a potential discomfort with large groups and a desire for a quieter work environment.

The HDS dives deeper than the HPI. While the HPI focused on strengths and finding the right range for each positive trait, the HDS gets trickier. Here's why: it includes "neutral" traits. Scoring these isn't about landing in the middle. Instead, you want to show a balanced connection to the trait, answering in a way that reflects your previous responses and avoids extremes.

The HDS test is built of 168 statements, each correlating with a different trait including excitable, Skeptical, Cautious, Reserved, Leisurely, Bold, Mischievous, Colorful, Imaginative, Diligent, and Dutiful. These are considered negative or "Dark Side" personality traits, as well as “neutral traits” (i.e., Diligent, Colorful, and Bold). Their main purpose is to measure behavioral tendencies that may impede your job performance.

The complexity of the test, as well as the variety of traits, requires prior knowledge and preparation to maximize your results. HDS-specific study guides, full HDS test with an explanation regarding each trait and each statement, as well as tips to improve, are found in our Hogan PrepPack

To learn more about the Hogan HDS test go to our designated HDS Page.

The third personality test is the Motives, Values, and Preferences Inventory (MVPI). Unlike the previous two tests – this one does not assess positive, negative, or neutral personality traits.

Instead, it uses 200 questions to measure your motivations, interests, and goals, which will help determine not only if you fit a specific work environment but specific roles and routes to success as well. The test differentiates between the position you are applying to, such as from manager and general employee positions but also between business (realistic oriented) and aesthetic (creative oriented) positions.

Let’s begin the MVPI Free Practice Test.

Hogan MVPI Free Test Questions

The MVPI test is also a behavioral questionnaire, but it focuses on personal values and goals that guide your decision-making. This questionnaire includes 200 items.

Each question presents a statement, with which you have to choose whether you agree, disagree, or are undecided.

MVPI Question #9

The humanities are the principle of all culture

Disagree

Agree

Uncertain

Answer #11: This statement assesses the Aesthetic trait.

When answering this question, you should consider whether agreeing to it demonstrates a positive attribute towards the trait. In this case, the statement expresses a creative, visually oriented individual, and therefore it is positive when concerning the Aesthetic trait.

For business positions, this statement is “Neutral” as business/scientific positions can have a large range of medium scores for the Aesthetic trait. Still, for this statement, the answer should be Agree.

For aesthetic positions, this statement is positive, as creative/designer positions should have a high score for the Aesthetic trait. Therefore, the answer should be Agree.

MVPI Question #10

The universe’s unknowns are concrete and learnable

Disagree

Agree

Uncertain

Answer #13: This statement assesses the Scientific trait.

In this case, the statement expresses a realistic and curious individual, and therefore it is positive when concerning the Scientific trait.

For business positions, this statement is positive as business/scientific positions should have a high score for the Scientific trait. Therefore, the answer should be Agree.

For aesthetic positions, this statement is “Neutral” as business/scientific positions can have a large range of medium scores for the Scientific trait. Still, for this statement, the answer should be Agree.

MVPI Question #11

I would like it more if I were to work independently

Disagree

Agree

Uncertain

Answer #13: This statement assesses the Affiliation trait.

In this case, the statement expresses a self-oriented and individualistic attitude, and therefore it is negative when concerning the Affiliation trait.

For manager positions, this statement is negative as leaders work in teams, lead their employees, and should inspire teamwork. Therefore, the answer should be Disagree.

For general positions, this statement is “Neutral” as universal employee positions vary between individual roles and part of a team. Still, for this statement, the answer should be Disagree.

MVPI Question #12

People who prefer to focus on labour over fun are uninteresting

Disagree

Agree

Uncertain

Answer #14: This statement assesses the Hedonistic trait.

In this case, the statement expresses a social attitude, while it may be lacking motivation for hard work, and therefore it is positive when concerning the Hedonistic trait.

For business positions, this statement is negative as business/scientific positions require hard work, thoroughness, and dedication which may sometimes overcome recreational activities. Therefore, the answer should be Disagree.

For aesthetic positions, this statement, while being more positive, as creative/designer positions are characterized by an open mind and a free spirit – is still negative for all workers since it shows a lack of work ethics. Therefore, the answer should be Disagree.

MVPI Question #13

It is preferable to be in charge than to be a subordinate

Disagree

Agree

Uncertain

Answer #15: This statement assesses the Power trait.

In this case, the statement expresses a strive to be a leader and take responsibility. In contrast, it may express not accepting authority, and therefore it is positive when concerning the Power trait.

For manager positions, this statement is positive, as leaders should strive to be in charge and take responsibility. It is exceptionally important for business managers since they usually work in a stricter hierarchy. Therefore, the answer should be Agree.

For general positions, this statement is mostly positive but can also be neutral. Employers are looking for strong, confident employees who will take further responsibilities for themselves, however, to an extent. Therefore, the answer should be Disagree.

The MVPI test is built of 200 statements, each correlating with a different trait (the five presented here, along with Altruistic, Commercial, Recognition, Security, and Tradition, for a total of 10 traits).

The special thing about the MVPI test is that most traits are not “absolute” – many are “Neutral”, as can be seen in the HDS test, and require precision and memory of previous responses when answering questions pertaining to specific traits. The difference between business and aesthetic positions is vital to fully understanding how the traits affect different roles.

The main challenge you will face in the Hogan personality test is to be able to understand what's behind every single statement while remembering your previous answers throughout a very long test.

Given that different positions require different scores for every trait and these scores are calculated differently in each Hogan test, in-depth understanding of each element is crucial. With our Hogan test prep pack you gain access to full simulation tests, detailed score reports and study guides as well as additional practice tests - all of which provide you with the knowledge and experience to ace the test for only 79$.

Make sure your strengths and potential shine through and get the score you deserve.

Congratulations!

You have successfully completed the personality portion of our Free Hogan Test. However, the test is not over, and after assessing your personal traits, you will now face the cognitive portion of the Hogan assessment – the HBRI (Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory) test.

The HBRI test includes graphs and tables, reading comprehension, and reasoning questions – all of which refer to different aspects of general businesses’ daily work.

Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory - HBRI Assessment

Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory questions assess how candidates identify and solve business-related problems, of three types:

  • Verbal Information
  • Quantitative Information (i.e. data in financial reports and statistical analyses)
  • Graphic Information (i.e. charts, graphs, tables).

On the actual test, you will be required to solve 24 questions within 30 minutes.

Which regional municipal authority is not paid the correct property tax, compared to the others?
A. North
B. East
C. South
D. West

The correct answer is D. West

To determine which regional municipal authority is paid property tax different than the others, relative to the house value, calculate the percentage of the property tax from that house's value, using the formula: (Property tax / house's value) X 100:

North: (78,785/525,234) X 100 ~ 0.15 X 100 = 15%
East: (48,653/324,356) X 100 ~ 0.15 X 100 = 15%
South: (23,623/157,487) X 100 ~ 0.15 X 100 = 15%
West: (45,361/412,369) X 100 ~ 0.11 X 100 = 11%

The West regional municipal authority is the only one in which the property tax payment is 11% of the house's value, while in the other regional municipal authorities the property tax payment is 15%.

Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory Question #15

Based on the previous years, what would be the best estimate for the 2018 total company's income?

A

140,742

B

140,760

C

138,736

D

140,700

The correct answer is (A) - 140,742.

To solve this question, you have to calculate the change in percentage between years according to the formula:

According to the pattern, from 2017 to 2018 the total income will rise by ~5.2%.

💡 Another way of calculating the change in percentage between years is using the formula:

To calculate the total income of 2018, use the formula:

Therefore, the total income of 2018 would be estimated at:

Question #18 - Text (answer the question below based on this passage)

Previous research established that “financial socialization” is the process through which children learn about finance, mainly from their parents. Most of the research concerning this process focuses on two aspects: the example parents set, and what they directly teach their children about money.

A new study suggests that a third aspect is no less important: the practical experience parents provide their children with money. There are various ways parents can give their children this practical experience: by giving them a regular allowance, by paying them for performing tasks that go beyond their regular chores, by offering cash rewards for good grades, or by encouraging them to save for a special purchase or a charitable donation. Some or all of these can be applied simultaneously, of course. The amount of money is not important – what matters is that the kids will have practical experience with money while the stakes are still low.

The researcher stresses the importance of gaining experience with money while the stakes are low, and while the children are under their parents’ guidance. If a person has to deal with money for the first time when alone, and the stakes are high (saving up for a house, paying bills, and managing daily expenses, for example), much more expensive and fateful mistakes might be made. The same mistakes can be made when the stakes are low, when the child can learn from them, and later in life, when alone and the sums are high, the child will avoid those same mistakes because they have practice and experience.

Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory Question #18

Which of these sitting arrangement charts is identical to the original, but rotated clockwise?

Original:

hbri-abstract-question

Answers:
A.

B.

C.

 The correct answer is A.

In questions that require mentally rotating an object, it can be helpful to focus on a salient feature of the object and examine what happens to it as the object rotates. For instance, in this question, you can focus on the single desk – in the original chart, it is located at the bottom-right corner with the chair facing the upper side of the chart. Now, carefully examine what happens when the chart rotates:

  • If you turn the chart 90° clockwise, the desk moves to the bottom-left corner, and the chair faces right.
  • If you turn the chart another 90° clockwise, the desk moves to the top-left corner, and the chair faces down.
  • If you turn the chart yet another 90° clockwise, the desk moves to the top-right corner, and the chair faces left.
Note: The question asks you to rotate the original chart clockwise, but does not specify by how many degrees the chart should be rotated. This means it is not relevant, you can choose to rotate it either clockwise or counterclockwise.

Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory Question #19

The company you work for is designing new ads. All the new ads must be approved by the board. If some of the new ads are turning a profit for the company, which of the following must be true?

A

All ads approved by the board are turning a profit.

B

Some of the ads approved by the board are causing losses.

C

None of the ads approved by the board are turning a profit.

D

Some of the ads approved by the board are turning a profit.

The correct answer is (D).

Answer (D) is the correct answer because it is the only one that must be true. Since all new ads must be approved by the board, it follows that the new ads that are turning a profit were also approved by the board. Therefore, it is true that some of the ads approved by the board are turning a profit.

Answer (A) is incorrect since the question states that only some of the new ads are turning a profit, not necessarily all.

Answer (B) is incorrect since the question requires that the answer must be true. While it is possible, realistically, that some of the ads are causing losses, we cannot know that from the presented information. The sentence “some of the new ads are turning a profit” does not necessarily mean that the opposite is also true (that some of the new ads are causing losses). It may be that the other ads are breaking even, or that all of them are turning a profit (since "some" means at least one, possibly all); there is not enough information to know. Since it is impossible to know for certain, the requirement to pick a statement that must be true, beyond a doubt, is not met.

Answer (C) is incorrect since the question clearly states that some of the ads are turning a profit, meaning it cannot be true that none of them is profitable.

The HBRI test measures your cognitive abilities and your capacity to handle daily tasks required by employees in a variety of positions. The questions will assess your abilities to solve problems, make decisions, analyse information, and learn from mistakes.

While there’s no time limit – you will be measured for answering time, as a clock moving forward will be present – making the test more challenging. While the questions may look simple at first sight – they are more elaborate than they seem, require a broad set of cognitive skills, and must be practiced in answering quickly and accurately. Precise and full simulations, accompanied by study guides and additional practice can be found in our Hogan PrepPack.
