The Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship test measures basic skills and abilities that you need to be a successful automotive service technician. When applying for an Automotive Technician apprenticeship you may also be required to take a mechanical aptitude test.

Automotive Service Technician Test Format

Depending on where you are taking the test you can most likely expect a multiple choice, paper & pencil format.

The Canadian test has a three-hour time limit where you will have to complete 100 multiple choice questions. Whereas, American versions of the test vary in the number of questions. Some of the exams may not have any time limit.

However, the purpose of all pre-apprenticeship tests is to ensure that every apprentice possesses the fundamental educational requirements to begin on-the-job technical training.


Canadian Automotive Exam Content

Canadian Trade Entrance Exams are organized into five clusters, each containing the trades that involve a similar level of skills and aptitudes. The Automotive Service Technician exam is within Cluster 3; therefore, if you are applying for an Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship you will take Entrance Exam 3. You will need a passing score of at least 70%.

The apprenticeship exam administered in Canada consists of math, science and reading comprehension.

  • Math: This section includes arithmetic, simple algebra and formula applications. Formulas are contained within the test information provided for use during the exam. There are 36 questions in this section.
  • Science: This section is mainly concerned with the application of conversion tables, which are supplied within the test booklet handed out at the time of the test. Questions involving the interpretation of diagrams and charts are also present in the Exam. There will be 35 science questions.
  • English/Reading Comprehension: This section consists 29 questions covering topics such as basic grammar, spelling and recall of information from specific scenarios.

If you are applying for a automotive service technician pre-apprenticeship in Alberta you will need to take the Alberta Entrance Exam 3.


U.S. Automotive Technician Test Content

When taking the Automotive Service Technician aptitude test, you will encounter a basic skills test, similar to an Accuplacer test. The test may include sections such as mathematics, reading comprehension, and sentence skills. Each test varies by location. Some tests may include other sections.

  • Mathematics: This section tests your basic math skills. It may include all or some of the following math skills: adding, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions, decimals and percentages. You may also be tested in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. There may also be a numerical reasoning section which tests your ability to identify the pattern in a series of numbers.
  • Reading Comprehension: This section tests your ability to read a passage and be able to answer questions referring to the passage. You may also need to be able to make inferences, developing critical understanding of a text and determining specific meaning of words based on the surrounding context.
  • Sentence Skills/Essay: This section tests your knowledge and skills in mechanics by measuring your basic English skills. You may be tested on grammar and sentence structure. This section may also include an essay.
  • Spatial Visualization: This section of the test measures your ability to see in two and three dimensions. This section is not found on all tests.
