The Welder apprenticeship aptitude test is a pre-apprenticeship cognitive screening exam administered by local construction trade unions across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The test covers high school-level subject matter in three main areas: Mathematics (basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, word problems, percentages, conversions, fractions), Reading Comprehension (passage-based questions on spelling, grammar, and conclusions), and Mechanical Reasoning (gears, tools, physical principles). Format is primarily multiple-choice; the US has both paper-and-pencil and computer-based versions depending on the local, while Canada and the UK use paper-and-pencil. The welder pre-apprenticeship test in Canada and the U.K. is a Paper & Pencil exam. In the U.S., while Paper & Pencil tests are likewise prevalent, some local unions administer a computer-based test. This is a timed exam, more uniform in Canada and the U.K. than in the U.S.
