FirstEnergy Pre-Employment Testing

Several positions at FirstEnergy require pre-employment tests. After you apply for a position that matches your skills and expertise, you may be required to undergo such a selection test. Edison Electric Institute (or EEI), the association that represents all US investor-owned electric companies, conducts these tests.

There Are Several FirstEnergy EEI Tests

The type of EEI test that you will take depends on the position to which you apply; Each test is designed to assess the candidate’s qualities required for that particular position. The test score is translated into the probabilities of successful job performance. The EEI tests administered at FirstEnergy are:

  • POSS test - for plant operating positions
  • MASS test - for plant maintenance positions
  • CAST test - for professional positions
  • TECH test - for technical positions
  • SASS test - for administrative positions
  • SO/PD test - for system operating / power dispatching positions
  • MRAB test - for meter reading positions
  • CSR test - for customer service positions

What Should I Take Away from the Interview?

Look at every interview as a unique learning opportunity. First, you may very well be asked back for a second or third interview, so use each interview to learn as much about the company and position as possible and try to discern if there is a specific style of questioning, so you can answer even better in the next round.

When Should I Begin Preparing For My FirstEnergy EEI Tests?

The best time to begin preparing for your FirstEnergy EEI test is as soon as possible. Giving yourself the ability to practice for your EEI test beforehand will give you an undoubted advantage over the other FirstEnergy applicants who will also be taking the same tests.

What Is the General Hiring Process at FirstEnergy?

The first stage will be the online application which will include, among other things, a number of questions about your work history and skill sets. If your application is accepted, a company rep will follow up with screening phone call to decide if you will move on to the next stage. Next comes the testing session, which will include the EEI test. Upon successful passing the test the company will invite you for either one or a series of sit down interviews to make a final decision on your candidacy. Once the company has decided to take you on, you will be invited to negotiate a job offer – Congratulations!
