Arizona Police Exams

Each police department requires their own exam. You will need to check with your department to see which exam they require. Different departments may use the same exam. Below is a list of Arizona police departments and their exams.


Flagstaff

To join the Flagstaff police department you will need to prepare for the Ergometrics FrontLine National Testing System. The exam consists of 2 tests: a Video-Based Human Relations and Judgment Test and the Writing Test. You will have 3 and a half hours to complete the exam.

On the Video-Based Human Relations and Judgment Test, you will watch a part of a video and then have to choose the best action to take in a multiple-choice format. You will have 10 seconds to answer the question. The video does not stop playing. This section lasts for 90 minutes.

The Writing Test is broken down into two parts. The first part is writing a report based on a video you will be shown. You will have 10 minutes to write your report. The second part is a multiple-choice writing and reading test. On this part of the exam you will have 25 minutes to answer 45 questions.


Glendale

To join the Glendale police department you must take the Entry Level Law Enforcement test created by CWH Research. The exam consists of 168 questions. You will be allowed 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete this exam. You must achieve a score of 70 to pass.The exam consists of questions that measure your basic skills and aptitudes, along with situational questions. It also contains questions that ask how you feel or think about a specific topic, or that ask you to describe yourself in various ways.


Mesa

To join the Mesa police department you have to complete a multiple-choice written exam which will measure abilities needed for the job. In order to continue in the hiring process you must receive a score of 70 or above. Preparing for the exam will ensure a high score on the test.


Phoenix

To become a police officer in Phoenix you must take the Entry Level Police Officer Examination that was created by Darany and Associates. It measures the skills needed to be a successful police officer. You will have two hours to complete the exam. There are 169 multiple choice questions spread out over 4 sections: Accuracy of Observation, Written Communication Skills, Reading with Understanding, and Biodata.


Scottsdale

To become a police officer in Scottsdale you must take the Police Officer Entry Level Series test (PO-EL 202-NC series) by IPMA-HR. It was designed to assess whether or not you have basic abilities necessary to learn and perform successfully in the police academy and, more importantly, on the job. You will be given 25 minutes to study a booklet. Afterward, the booklet will be collected and you will have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the test, which contains 100 multiple-choice questions. This series has a cognitive and a non-cognitive component.


State Trooper

To become a state trooper you have to take a multiple-choice written examination. There are 100 questions spread out over 11 sections. The sections include: perceptual ability/photo; perceptual ability/situational; sensitivity; reading comprehension; vocabulary; grammar/word choice/spelling; general knowledge/reasoning; numeric skills; logic - reasoning logic, and deduction and logic - word series. You will be given 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam. You will be allowed to use a calculator on the exam. In order to pass the exam, you must receive a score of 75 or higher.


Tempe

In Tempe, Arizona you have to take a written exam after successfully passing the physical agility test. The police exam includes reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, problem solving, memory and more. The exam takes approximately two hours to complete and is scored upon completion. If you receive a score of 70% or higher you are placed on an eligibility list.


Tucson

To join the Tucson police department you must pass a written exam. The exam measures your skills and abilities in general knowledge you should have before training to become a police officer. The exam includes reading comprehension, memorization, and grammar. You will receive your test results the same day as the exam.
