State of Illinois Jobs Testing

The State of Illinois Civil Service Tests are required for candidates who are interested in employment with the state government. These exams are computer-administered and formatted in multiple-choice style questions. Generally, the Illinois state job testing process takes about 90 minutes, but exams with a greater amount of material may be allotted more time.

Applying for Illinois State Jobs

Illinois’ online civil service system allows candidates to complete and submit applications electronically, although the option of printing out and mailing the forms is still available. Be sure to thoroughly read all the minimum requirements posted on the job listing to ascertain that you are qualified for the job and to check the the application deadline for the Illinois Civil Service Test so that there will be no surprises. There are numerous opportunities, job titles, and classifications offered under the Illinois Civil Service system for both state and local jobs that fall under the “competitive service” and thus require the successful passing of the Civil Service Exam of Illinois. Illinois State Universities Civil Service System (SUCSS)

Employment with state universities in Illinois is a part of the state’s civil service system and includes the same regulations in accordance with examinations and hiring. The IL State Universities Civil Service System  examination generally takes between 2 – 4 hours depending on the particular exam and position being applied for. Although the number of test questions may differ from a regular state of Illinois Civil Service Exam for the same position, the content and subjects remain the same since both are administered by the state. A minimum score of 70 is required to pass the exam and results are available online within three to four days.

Careers with SUCSS of Illinois include supervisory and managerial titles, clerical, administrative, and fiscal duties, engineering, and law enforcement.


Local Civil Service Testing in Illinois

In addition to the myriad of opportunities offered by state agencies and departments, those interested in a career in civil service can also apply for vacancies and examinations offered by local IL municipalities. Employment with Springfield or Chicago Civil Service, which includes the Chicago Fire Department Test, offers nearly all of the opportunities available at the state level, each position requiring its own respective Illinois Civil Service Test.
