Chicago Fire Department Exam Outline

The Chicago Fire Department test is a pass or fail test, and therefore you need to study for it well in order to pass, because the Chicago fire department hiring process does not publicize the acceptance rate. The Chicago firefighter exam tends to focus on six fields of knowledge.

  1. Math- to be a firefighter means having to deal with math constantly throughout your service, from the basics of picking the correct length ladders and hoses, to understanding how much water is left in the tank. You also need to study math word problems because a lot of the math comes up in conversation and you need to be able to pick out the correct numbers correctly.
  2. Reading Comprehension- As a firefighter you will be learning a lot throughout your service and will also have to follow the rules and regulations in order to ensure the safety of firefighters and civilians alike.
  3. Mechanical Aptitude- Firefighters use a lot of mechanical principles including levers, gears, motion, etc. You will need to understand what the most secure way to place a ladder is, how to carry something efficiently and how to forcibly enter vehicles and structures.
  4. Situational Judgment Questions- You will be making many calls on the fly as there is no standard scenario when it comes to saving lives. The Chicago Fire Department needs to know that they can trust you in various situations.
  5. Spatial Orientation- You will not always have a clear view of the fire, or incident and so you will need to have good spatial orientation in order to locate the fire, or civilians that need rescuing.
  6. General Knowledge- You may be asked questions about how many days in the year there are (365) and all sorts of general knowledge you learned until high school.

It is important to note that if you don’t pass the test then you have to wait a year to take it again. Therefore it is highly suggested that you start preparing as soon as possible!
