What Is the Discover Rules – cut-e scales ix Test?

The cut-e scales ix is an abstract reasoning test that assess your ability to recognize patterns and discrepancies and interpret relationships in given data.

It belongs to a category of logic tests, which includes the scales cls (AON Inductive-logical Reasoning), clx (AON Inductive Reasoning), scales lst (AON Deductive-logical Thinking), and switchChallenge (AON Deductive Reasoning).

The test consists of 20 questions to be solved in 5 minutes. In each question, you will be presented with a series of 9 objects containing shapes, symbols, lines, etc. Your task is to recognize the pattern of the series and identify the object that doesn't fit the rule of the pattern.

Correct Answer
Incorrect Answer

The correct answer is object #7.

The objects form a formal series. All objects contain 3 shapes of different types (a trapezoid, a square and a triangle), one inside the other. When moving from one object to the next one in the series, the outer shape becomes the inner shape, the middle shape becomes the outer shape, and the inner shape becomes the middle shape.

The only object that does not fit this rule is object #7, in which the inner shape is a square instead of a triangle and the middle shape is a triangle instead of a square.

Correct Answer
Incorrect Answer

The correct answer is object #3.

The objects form a formal series. All objects contain a ‘V’ shape surrounded by 4 lines cutting across each other. In each object, one of the intersection points is missing. When moving from one object to the next one in the series, the missing intersection shifts one corner anti-clockwise.

The only object that does not fit this rule is object #3, as it has the top-right intersection missing instead of the bottom-right.

Note: The 90°-clockwise movement of the ‘V’ shape is kept throughout the entire series, and thus cannot be the key for solving the question; it only serves as a distraction.

Correct Answer
Incorrect Answer

The correct answer is object #7.

All objects conform to the following rule (regardless of their order): Each object contains a small shape located outside a big shape.
The only object that does not fit this rule is object #7, in which the small shape is located inside the big shape.

As you can see in the sample questions above, the differences between the 9 (!) answering options are not so easy to find. Imagine facing 20 similar questions to answer in only 5 minutes.

Discover Rules – cut-e scales ix Test Tips

  • Avoid guessing – the test’s score is determined by the number of correct answers and deducted for incorrect ones. Thus, if you can’t figure it out, you better move on and not randomly choose an answer.
  • Keep on moving – Not everyone manages to complete all 20 tasks within 5 minutes. If you can’t identify the correct answers, you can go forward to the next task, and if you have enough time, you can revisit them later.
  • Pay attention to the details – the key to acing the test is in the fine details. Pay attention to all the recurring elements in the series to discover its rule.
