About the ASVAB Test

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a mandatory multiple-choice test for military enlistment. It is used to determine suitable occupations within the military.

The ASVAB's questions include areas like paragraph comprehension, vocabulary, word knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, reading comprehension, and knowledge in mathematics, mechanics, and electronics.

As a multiple-choice aptitude test, it aims to estimate your abilities and proficiency in various subjects. However, it does not measure your overall intelligence, and it does not work as an IQ test.

ASVAB Test's Difficulty

This multiple-choice exam offers options for each question, simplifying the process. However, without prior knowledge and proper practice to answer questions quickly, the test is challenging. ASVAB test takers must finish subtests within limited timeframes, potentially making it difficult to double-check work or think over questions.

What score should I aim for on the ASVAB?

To join the Navy, you must achieve an AFQT minimum score of 35 on your ASVAB Test. 

Securing your desired position and obtaining one of the highly sought-after Navy jobs (NEC) requires a high score. However, achieving this on a challenging 3-hour test like the ASVAB is no easy task.

The required score depends on your desired military branch and your level of education. If you have a GED, a score of 50 or above is necessary for all branches except the Coast Guard, which requires a 47. For those with a high school diploma, the minimum scores for each branch are as follows:

Minimum ASVAB Scores by Military Branch:

  • 31: National Guard, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy
  • 36: Coast Guard

Scores Required For Navy Jobs

The Navy requires high school graduates to have a minimum ASVAB score of 31. This requirement increases to 50 for those with a high school equivalency certificate such as the GED or HiSET. 

To increase recruitment, in 2022 the Navy started a pilot program that accepts AFQT scores in the 10th to 30th percentile if they meet certain line score minimums. According to the Navy website, these minimums include one of the following:

  • GS+MC+EI=170
  • VE+MK+MC+CS=220
  • VE+AR=110 MC=50

Navy Detailed Requirements

To qualify to join the Navy, you need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen with a permanent residence visa or Green Card and a bona fide U.S. residence. Officers must be U.S. citizens.
  • Age: Enlisted sailors must be between 17-34 years old. Officers must be 19-35 years old.
  • Education: A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. Officers need a four-year BS or BA.
  • Family: Single parents can join, but those with more than two dependents under 18 cannot.
  • Financial Obligations: You must demonstrate financial stability.
  • Drug/Alcohol Policy: The Navy has a zero-tolerance policy, requiring two urinalysis tests and a review of past use.
  • Medical/Legal/Moral Standards: Your application will be evaluated against medical, legal, and character standards.
