Three tips that make the biggest difference to your ElecTest score:

• Master schematics and control circuits. Schematics, print reading and control circuits form one of the eight official content areas, and the same skills resurface inside the PLC, motors and electronics questions. Time invested here pays off across the whole exam.
• Review the theory, not just the practical. Hands-on experience alone is rarely enough. Many experienced electricians lose points on definitions, formulas and principles they use intuitively but have not studied formally in years.
• Never leave a question blank. All questions have four answer options and there is no penalty for guessing, so always select an answer before moving on.

The Ramsay ElecTest (Form A5) consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer options. Test sessions typically run about one hour, which works out to roughly one minute per question.

Ramsay Corporation does not publish a fixed time limit for the ElecTest — the administering employer sets the testing conditions. In practice you should prepare to work at a one-minute-per-question pace, and note that completion time appears on the score report the employer receives.

Yes. Ramsay Corporation requires all of its tests to be proctored, whether taken on paper or online. This means you will take the ElecTest under supervision — either in person at the employer's site or a testing centre, or via remote proctoring — and not unsupervised at home.

Practically, this means no notes, no reference material and no calculator unless the employer explicitly permits one. It is worth practicing under the same conditions: closed-book, uninterrupted, and timed.

There is no official passing score. Ramsay Corporation does not recommend cut scores, stating that a passing score depends on the labour market and the specific job requirements, and that it cannot advise on one without conducting a formal validation study for that employer. Each employer sets its own threshold.

What Ramsay does publish is normative data. On a sample of 3,238 applicants, the average ElecTest score was 29 out of 60, with a standard deviation of 8.6. That gives you a realistic benchmark: scoring in the high 30s places you comfortably above the average applicant, and scoring around 40 or above puts you near the top 10% of test takers.

Because employer thresholds are competitive and unpublished, the practical goal is simply to score as high as you can rather than aim for a specific number.

Retake eligibility is set by the employer, not by Ramsay Corporation. Ramsay's guidance is that organisations should establish their own written policies on how often and under what conditions candidates may be retested, and that retesting should use an alternate equivalent form of the test where possible.

The ElecTest does have alternate forms available (Form A5 and Form B2), so a retake will not necessarily present you with the same questions. In practice, many employers require you to wait before reapplying for a role, and a below-threshold score usually means the current application does not progress. That makes first-attempt preparation the priority.

Electrical competence is difficult to verify from a résumé. Employers use the Ramsay ElecTest because it is a content-validated assessment — built with input from job experts and shown by Ramsay's own research to correlate with manager performance ratings — that confirms whether a candidate genuinely has the practical electrical knowledge the role demands, from interpreting control circuit schematics to diagnosing faults with test instruments.

The ElecTest is classified at journey-level, which means it is used for roles where established electrical knowledge is expected rather than entry-level positions. Passing it signals to major employers that you are ready for skilled electrical and maintenance work with clear progression into senior technical and controls roles.
