The Southern California Gas Company invites its prospective job candidates for several interviews. If you successfully pass your Yellow Battery Test, you will have a phone interview with a Human Resources manager, in which you will talk about your education, work experience, and your new role at the SoCalGas. The second interview is conducted in Los Angeles in one of the company’s offices and takes the form of a panel. You will converse with two or three managers and a Human Resources’ representative. Questions asked in the second interview are usually situational, behavioral, and technical.  The SoCalGas’s Clerical Assessment – the Yellow Battery

Employers at the SoCalGas are interested in hiring only experts in their fields. To evaluate job applicants’ general aptitude for the applied position and their proficiency, the SoCalGas invites them to take the Clerical, Meter Reading, or Customer Contact – Yellow Battery Test. By asking job candidates to pass the Clerical Test, employers at the SoCalGas want to ascertain that they are good at following written directions, writing grammatically correct sentences, solving mathematical problems, and coding. These skills and abilities are of the utmost importance for those job applicants who are entering on the career of clerks, meter readers, and customer contact managers. To evaluate the intelligence of prospective employees more precisely, the Yellow Battery Test is divided into four sections:

The Following Directions Test – This test is designed to measure how well job applicants follow rules and written directions. After you have read certain rules, you will need to apply them to specified situations. Based on your decision, you will also need to decide what actions to take concerning these situations. This is a multiple-choice test. You will be required to select one correct answer among three or four. The test’s time limit is extremely short. You will be given only 5 minutes to complete 24 questions.   

The Language Skills Test – This test is a good measurement of candidates’ language proficiency. It evaluates their knowledge not only of general rules of grammar but also of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Applicants’ understanding of words’ meaning and connotation is evaluated as well. The format of the Language Skills Test is simple. You will be asked to look at sentences, a part of which will be underlined, and decide whether this underlined part contains a mistake – grammatical, spelling, or semantical. This is a speeded, multiple-choice test. You will have only 5 minutes to evaluate 25 sentences.

The Computation Test – This test measures candidates’ knowledge of arithmetic and mathematics. The mathematical problems you will need to solve will contain not only whole numbers but decimals, simple fractions, and percentages. It is a multiple-choice test with a time limit of 5 minutes.

The Coding Skills Test – This test asks job applicants to code information in accordance with a specified system. On the test, you will be asked to analyze a table with a list of items divided into 3 or 4 categories, each of which has its particular code. Once you have analyzed these codes, you will be presented with new data. Taking it into account, you will need to select a correct code for each item in each category. There are 72 coding problems on the Yellow Battery Test, which you will be required to solve within 5 minutes. 

Questions asked on the Clerical Test are of varying difficulty. Yet what makes the test truly daunting is a short time limit given to perform its tasks. What do Clerical Worker, Meter Reader, & Customer Contact Managers do?

The Clerical Test aims to assess applicants who, once employed at the SoCalGas, will perform fundamentally different duties.

Clerical Workers work in the office and provide various office support to the company. Among the tasks they usually carry out are answering and making telephone calls, sending and receiving faxes, entering data into a computer, and filing records. Clerical workers are expected to possess computer application and typing skills as well as to know how to use different office equipment – a fax, printer, and copy machine.   

Meter Reader is hired to read the gas meter for residential or commercial customers. The meter reader’s equipment includes maps and a hand-held computer. Unlike the cleric giving services in the office, the meter reader works outside, starting his job early in the morning and walking 5 or 7 miles per day through urban and rural areas, regardless of weather condition. 

Customer Contact Representative gets in touch with the company’s existing and potential customers and answers their questions about its products and services. Customer Contact Representatives also process orders, prepare correspondence, and ensure customers’ overall satisfaction. They also open and maintain customers’ accounts, prepare product reports, relay messages, and manage phone calls.    

Despite significant differences between their duties, clerical workers, meter readers, and customer contact representatives are required to pass the same Yellow Battery Test. Q: How long do I have to wait to retake the Clerical Test, if I fail it?

A: You can retake the Clerical Test – Yellow Battery after a certain waiting period. If you failed the Clerical Test once, you will have your second attempt three months after your first one. If you do not pass the test again, you will have your third attempt six months after the second. Fourth and the subsequent tests are taken one year after the previous failed attempt. 

Q: How many questions are there on the Clerical – Yellow Battery Test?

A: There are more than 130 questions in the Yellow Battery Test. They are unequally divided between the Following Written Directions Test (24 questions), the Language Skills Test (25 questions), and the Coding Test (72 questions).
