Situational judgment tests (SJTs) are a popular psychological tool used by many assessment companies, employers, and organizations to evaluate applicants' behavioral and cognitive abilities when introduced with hypothetical, daily work-related situations and conflicts. The test is often used in the initial phase of the hiring process, as a threshold to proceeding further in the recruitment procedure.
These tests can be tricky and challenging as it isn't always clear what is the right or wrong answer for each question. That is why preparation for these tests is crucial. The scenarios presented on SJTs always ask for a resolution of a given conflict or situation which, although being hypothetical, might very much rely on realistic situations that occur in a workplace. You can expect to find between 25 – 50 scenarios on any given situational judgment test. The scenarios are often engaging and challenging. After you are presented with a scenario you will then have to either find the most (or least) suitable response to the scenario or rank the responses in order of effectiveness.
Read each of the given scenarios and each possible response carefully before answering. Although one answer choice may seem appropriate, there may be another one which is more sensible. If the question asks you to rank the responses, compare them to each other. However, keep in mind that all the responses may be effective, or they may all be ineffective - your task is to rank the responses, not decide if they are right or wrong.
Before taking the SJT, read about the employer. Companies usually publish an agenda or highlight in their publications their views of service and sales. Try to find out the competencies that are highly valued by the employer in the position you are applying for.
