National Firefighter Selection Test Content

The NFST covers three fundamental cognitive abilities that are essential for the effective performance of a firefighter’s job:

The test is designed to highlight the most-qualified candidates. Communities rely on the professionalism of the fire department to provide critical services in emergency circumstances. Although the cognitive skills tested are basic, they are at a level commensurate with the workday situations experienced by firefighters. Prior firefighting experience is not needed in answering any test item.

Stanard & Associates offers the NFST as a written cognitive exam, and recommends an oral, structured interview that is primarily a personality test with a focus on characteristics such as motivation, interpersonal relations and community-oriented service.

Reading Comprehension

Assessing the ability to understand words, ideas and concepts, the NFST firefighter test presents short passages, each followed by various questions and alternatives. Based on the meaning and information contained in the passage, the items require an analysis, conclusion or information recall.

The Reading Comprehension section includes 25 questions, to be answered within a timeframe of 25 minutes. It is to your benefit to answer every question as wrong answers are not subject to penalty.

Mathematics

The NFST presents many basic math functions and concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, simple square roots and squares, beginning algebra, conversion of measurements including feet to inches, perimeter, area, circumference, diameter, radius and ratios. Some fire-related word problems are also found within this section.

Keep in mind that all math material tested is considered basic. Working on an NFST practice tests with Q & A analysis and reviewing a National Firefighter Selection Test study guide will contribute to higher score. These study elements, all found at JobTestPrep, provide a quick review of math functions as well as a familiarization of the types of questions and exam format that you will face on the actual test. The Math section includes a time limit of 30 minutes.

Listening Comprehension

A moderately long passage is read aloud by the exam administrator. You are expected to take thorough notes. Further along in the exam session, you will find questions relating to that passage. The task is to answer the questions using your notes. There are 20 questions and a time frame of 20 minutes on the listening comprehension section of the NFST.
