What is the HOAE test?

Taking the Health Occupations Aptitude Exam (HOAE Test) is a major prerequisite for many healthcare programs in North America. The HOAE is provided by the Psychological Services Bureau (PSB) and covers subjects such as verbal ability, arithmetic, natural sciences, and more. The purpose of this test is to ensure applicants of health-related programs are ready and able to complete them successfully.

Note: Being admitted to the program you want is not always as simple as passing the HOAE. We recommend doing your research regarding all the requirements to boost your chances of getting into your desired program.

Subjects Covered by the HOAE Test

The HOAE Exam covers a wide range of subjects covered during your time in both middle school and high school. The test includes 305 questions spanning over five different subtests:

As you can see, you are given very little time to complete each of the sections that make up the HOAE. Using HOAE test prep materials can improve your response time to difficult questions, thus improving your time management and answer accuracy.

Subtest Number of Questions Time Limit
Academic Aptitude 75 40 Minutes
Spelling 45 15 Minutes
Reading Comprehension 35 35 Minutes
Info. In the Natural Sciences 25 25 Minutes
Vocational Adjustment Index 90 15 Minutes

Let’s take a quick look at types of questions you can expect to find in each of the five HOAE subtests:

Part I - Academic Aptitude

This section of the HOAE can determine your ability and readiness to learn. It includes three subsections testing your verbal, arithmetic, and nonverbal skills.

Now that you have an idea of the Academic Aptitude section of the HOAE, why don’t we try to answer some sample questions:

The verbal questions you will encounter in this section of the HOAE will have you find the “odd word out”. This section of the pack is currently in development, but you can see an example of the HOAE-style verbal questions by following this link.

Here you will need to demonstrate your basic arithmetic skills. Questions in this section include those for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, means, decimals, etc.

For example:

A client brings a check for $563.04. He wants to deposit $326 into his checking account, get $40 in cash and deposit the rest into a savings account. How much will he deposit into this savings account?

A. $197.04

B. $204.04

C. $297.04

D. $299.04

Answer with Explanation

The correct answer is A.

First, let's calculate how much money the client wants in his checking account and in cash:

Checking + cash = 326 + 40 = 366.

Now, we subtract this number from the total amount of money – the sum of the check: 563.04-366 = 197.04.

Alternative explanation: If we only subtract $326 (the deposit) from $563.04 (the check/total), we get $237.04 – even before subtracting the amount of cash, we can eliminate answers C and D, as they are too much. Next we would subtract $40 from $237.04, but notice that since 40 is a larger number than 37, we know that the result will be smaller than 200, and so we can also eliminate answer choice B and choose answer A, the correct answer.

In this section, you are tasked with identifying patterns and must choose the correct symbol to complete each one. Try finding the pattern in the image below before looking at the provided answer explanation:

Answer with Explanation

The correct answer is 4.

The relationship between figure X and figure Y is as follows:

Figure Y represents figure X:

  1. Flipped horizontally
  2. With the top part of the figure becoming dark.

The correct answer must have the same relationship with figure Z.

Answers, 1, 3 and 5 can be eliminated as they do not show figure Z flipped horizontally. Answer 2 can be eliminated as the bottom part of the figure is dark.

We are left with answer choice 4, which is the correct answer, as it portrays figure Z flipped horizontally with the top part becoming dark.

The practice contained in this pack can help you quickly discern patterns in these abstract-style questions, thus improving your answering speed.

Part II - Spelling

In this section of the exam, you are required to demonstrate your ability to spell words correctly. Note: Many of the words found in this section will often correlate to the program you are applying to.

Below is an example of the types of questions you will find in this section:

Select the word that is spelled incorrectly.

A. Judgment

B. Permenant

C. Dialogue

D. Adjacent

Answer with Explanation

The correct answer is B.

The correct spelling of the word is permanent.

Part III - Reading Comprehension

The purpose of this section is to determine your ability to read and understand what you are reading. This includes grasping the intent of the author, being able to draw conclusions from the text, extracting information, etc.

Try reading the following passage to answer the question below:

Answer with Explanation

The correct answer is A.

According to the passage, "obesity is highest among low-income women." (B) is incorrect since it notes that social class is inversely correlated with obesity – i.e. the higher the class, the less likely women are to be obese. Age and marital status are not mentioned in the passage at all.

Part IV - Information in the Natural Sciences

This section evaluates your accumulated knowledge of mainly high school level science questions. The topics covered include biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.

Note: Practice tests for this section our HOAE-style pack are currently under development. There are several examples of questions found in this section of the actual exam here.

Part V - Vocational Adjustment Index

This part of the test measures your personality. Passing this portion of the HOAE is essential as it can tell whether you are suited for a career in healthcare. During this section, it is your job to choose whether you agree or disagree with a variety of statements.

Hint: Although it is said that there are no right or wrong answers during a personality test, some responses can have a negative effect on your overall profile. It is best to adapt your answers to the job environment you wish to work in.
