Louisiana Police Exams

New Orleans

To become a New Orleans police officer you need to take a multiple-choice exam and do writing exercise. These test measure skills required to be a successful police officer.

The first part of the test is a multiple choice exam. The multiple choice exam covers the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Written Communication
  • Form Completion
  • Knowledge of Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation
  • Oral Comprehension
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Observation Ability
  • Memory
  • Inductive Reasoning
  • Deductive Reasoning
  • Exercising Judgment
  • Social Judgment/Interpersonal Skills
  • Selective Attention
  • Perceptual Accuracy 
  • Recognizing Transformed Objects or Persons.

Each of these skills and abilities are necessary to perform the job of a Police Officer.

The second part of the testing process is the writing exercise. The writing exercise is administered immediately after the multiple choice exam. For the writing exercise you will take notes while you listen to two police-related incidents. You will then use your notes to write a report describing the incidents.

Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Exam

This exam is used in various police departments throughout the state. To find out which department administers this exam check out the Louisiana State Officer of Examiners site. The police officer test consists of two parts: a test in following oral directions and a multiple-choice written examination. You must score a minimum of 75% to pass the exam.

The Oral Directions Test determines how well you are able to follow oral directions in accomplishing simple tasks. This part of the exam will take approximately thirty minutes.

The Written Test, which is the second part of the exam for police officer is a written test consisting of 73 multiple-choice questions. The part of the exam measures skills in various areas related to the job. You will have one hour and thirty minutes to complete this part of the exam. There are 16 test sections found on the exam.   • Logic
  • Classifying Observed Facts
  • Noticing Details

  • Controlling the Physical Surroundings
  • Recognizing Similarities or Patterns and Recognizing Differences or Patterns.
