Police officers are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), at minimum. Many police departments require that law enforcement officers be at least 21 years of age, though some departments will hire new police officers fresh out of high school. Those who are hired straight after high school are generally required to train until they turn 21 in order to become a cop.
In addition to obtaining a high school diploma, police officers train at a police academy. Some cops complete law enforcement or criminal justice degree programs as well. To become a cop in the U.S., one must be U.S. citizen (those who wish to serve in a Canadian police department must be Canadian citizens). Candidates who wish to become police officers are required to have a valid drivers license with a clean record.
As previously mentioned, individuals interested in becoming a law enforcement officer must obtain a high school diploma or GED. Though it may not be necessary to have a college degree, it is strongly recommended. Many states require police officers to have at least an associate’s degree. Other states may even require a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field.
Police departments, both in the U.S. and Canada, have various testing for police officer candidates.
