The TFS Cognitive Ability and Psychometric Assessment is a pre-employment assessment stage used by Tasmania Fire Service to screen recruit firefighter candidates, made up of two separate online assessments: Cognify, covering numerical reasoning, verbal comprehension, and problem solving, and SafeSelect, a personality and behaviour questionnaire.
Both assessments are delivered through the PRISM platform. Cognify is a game-based test made up of several individually timed games, each under five minutes, about 30 minutes in total, with a repeatable practice tutorial before each one. SafeSelect is untimed, multiple-choice, and takes most candidates around an hour, with breaks allowed and progress saved between sessions. It's a profile-based test rather than a right-or-wrong one, so honesty and consistency matter more than strategy, go with your first instinct rather than over-thinking. You can only complete each assessment once in any 12-month period, some sittings may be supervised, and after SafeSelect you may be contacted by a psychologist accredited with the Australian Institute of Forensic Psychology (AIFP) to clarify certain results.
Our complete TFS Firefighter Assessment PrepPack includes practice for both stages: Cognify game drills for Tally Up, Proof It, and Resemble, plus a SafeSelect-style personality practice course, built to help you walk into test day prepared and confident.

We've created a comprehensive TFS prep course designed to help you succeed. Our course closely mimics the actual game formats and platform, allowing you to identify and improve your weaker areas. With this focused preparation, you'll be confident and ready to excel on test day.
Why preparation matters: Cognify's games are individually timed, delivered through the PRISM platform on your own laptop or desktop (a mouse is recommended over a trackpad), in a quiet space with your phone off and no help from others. There's no calculator or paper needed. Once a game's timer runs out, that's it, you move to the next one, and some sittings may be supervised. SafeSelect, by contrast, is untimed, but with no right or wrong answers to fall back on, honesty and a quick first instinct matter more than second-guessing. Our practice tests and drills are built around those same real conditions, so when test day comes, the format, the pacing, and the platform won't be something you're feeling for the first time.
The TFS Cognitive Ability and Psychometric Assessment is a pre-employment assessment used by Tasmania Fire Service to screen recruit firefighter candidates, delivered online through the PRISM platform as Stage 3 of the recruitment process, after the Written Application and Physical Fitness Assessment (Shuttle Run), and before the Physical Abilities Assessment. It's made up of two assessments: Cognify, a game-based test covering numerical reasoning, verbal comprehension, and problem solving, and SafeSelect, a personality and behaviour questionnaire that builds a psychological risk profile for high-risk work.
TFS firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies, including urban and rural firefighting, road crash rescue, technical and confined space rescue, urban search and rescue, and hazardous material (HAZMAT) incidents, alongside providing emergency care and community fire safety education. The role calls for teamwork, physical and emotional resilience, and strong communication skills, and successful recruits complete the 15-week Firefighter Development Program, based mainly at the Cambridge Training Complex with components in Burnie and Launceston, including a water safety element in full turnout gear. More detail on the role is available on TFS's own careers page.
Recruitment runs through a staged process: after submitting a Written Application, candidates complete the Physical Fitness Assessment (Shuttle Run), then the Cognitive Ability and Psychometric Assessment covered on this page, followed by the Physical Abilities Assessment, a review of the written application and shortlisting for interview, a Medical Assessment, Interview, Referee Reports, and Pre-Employment Check, before Final Selection and Appointment. The Cognify and SafeSelect assessments can each only be completed once in any 12-month period, so results carry across recruitment rounds within that window.

At JobTestPrep, we've helped thousands of candidates pass competitive hiring assessments since 1992. Our materials are designed by psychometric experts and updated based on real candidate feedback to reflect the latest test formats.
Hi, I'm Yedidya. I hold a B.A. in Psychology and am currently pursuing an M.A. in Organizational Psychology with a focus on psychometric assessment and testing methodology. I've been with JobTestPrep since 2020, where I amassed significant experience in helping candidates ace their civil service exams and land their ideal jobs.
My expertise in cognitive assessment design and test-taking strategy directly informs the TFS firefighter examination preparation materials on this page. I've worked extensively with the game-based cognitive frameworks underlying Cognify, particularly numerical reasoning, verbal comprehension, and problem solving, as well as the personality and behaviour profiling used in SafeSelect. This experience allows me to create realistic practice materials that mirror the demands of TFS's PRISM-delivered Cognitive Ability and Psychometric Assessment stage.
This page provides comprehensive preparation for the TFS firefighter assessment, with practice games calibrated to match the real Cognify format, detailed explanations of reasoning patterns, and strategic guidance to help you approach the SafeSelect questionnaire with confidence.

Assessed through SafeSelect, an untimed, multiple-choice questionnaire measuring your personality, behavioural preferences, and work style, used to build a psychological risk profile for high-risk work. There are no right or wrong answers, most candidates finish in about an hour, and you can take breaks with your progress saved between sessions.
Cognify is made up of several individually timed games or puzzles, each under five minutes, about 30 minutes to complete all of them. SafeSelect is untimed, and while many candidates finish in around an hour, you can take breaks at any time and your progress is saved when you log back in.
For Cognify, yes, you'll be required to complete practice assessments before the real one, and you must pass the practice assessment before proceeding, so this is the best way to prepare. For SafeSelect, there isn't specific preparation you can do since it's based on your own preferences, values, and beliefs, but it's best to answer honestly, go with your first instinct, and move through the questions quickly rather than over-thinking.
As soon as you receive your PRISM invite, activate your account right away. Your account shows which assessments you've been invited to and the End Date by which they must be completed. If you can't finish by that date, speak with your employer or recruiter, though an extension isn't always possible.
It may be. Activate your account as soon as possible, since it must be activated before you can take part in a supervised assessment. You'll know a session is supervised when, after clicking Start Test and completing your Background Information, a pop-up asks for your supervisor's email and password before you can proceed.
Be comfortable, relaxed, and well rested, wearing any glasses or contacts you need. Complete the assessments in a quiet space free from distractions and interruptions, with your phone turned off. Don't attempt them if you're unwell or affected by alcohol or other drugs, and don't get help from others while answering.
Use a laptop or desktop computer, Windows or Mac. A mouse is recommended over a trackpad for Cognify, since it's more responsive. Use the latest version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge, and make sure pop-up blockers are disabled.
No. Once you've completed an assessment as part of a job application, you won't be able to complete the same test again for 12 months.
The results are used to build a psychological risk profile, comparing your profile against that of candidates likely to succeed in high-risk roles. You may be contacted by a psychologist accredited with the Australian Institute of Forensic Psychology (AIFP) to clarify certain results.
It's Stage 3 of TFS's 9-stage application process, coming after the Written Application and Physical Fitness Assessment (Shuttle Run), and before the Physical Abilities Assessment.
