The QFD Online Cognitive Ability Test is a Pearson VUE-delivered assessment used by the Queensland Fire Department (QFD), formerly known as Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), as part of its Recruit Firefighter selection process. It is completed online under live remote proctoring.
Key facts about the QFD Online Cognitive Ability Test:
- The test covers two components: Mechanical Reasoning, and Core Abilities (literacy, numeracy, problem solving, and analytical aptitude).
- Unlike a stand-alone retest system, the assessment is tied to a specific QFD recruitment campaign. If you don't progress, you'll generally need to wait for the next campaign to be invited to sit the test again, rather than booking an individual retake on demand.
- QFD has not published a fixed validity period for cognitive test results the way it has for the Psychological Assessment (valid 12 months). Each new campaign is treated as its own selection process, so check current guidance from QFD Talent Acquisition before assuming a past result carries forward.

Mechanical Reasoning Test

QFD Firefighter Test Prep FAQs
No. This PrepPack is built specifically around the Online Cognitive Ability Test, the Mechanical Reasoning and Core Abilities components delivered through Pearson VUE. It does not include physical fitness preparation for the Beep Test or OFAT, or content for the Psychological Assessment, since those are separate stages of the QFD selection process with different formats entirely.
The free practice page gives you a small sample, one question per test type, so you can see the format before committing to anything. This PrepPack is the full preparation course: 47 timed tests and drills across both components, plus a complete guide, built for candidates who want thorough, structured practice rather than a quick preview.
Since QFD's Online Cognitive Ability Test measures speed and accuracy under time pressure as much as raw ability, we recommend starting as soon as you know your test date, rather than cramming in the final days. Working through the drills once, then repeating full-length timed simulations closer to test day, tends to build both accuracy and pacing more effectively than a single pass through the material.
The PrepPack reflects the current QFD name and test structure. QFES was renamed the Queensland Fire Department (QFD) on 1 July 2024, and this pack is built around the Online Cognitive Ability Test as currently administered under that name.
If your test is coming up fast, prioritize in this order: Human Relations first - it's the largest section (76 questions in 57 minutes) and can count for up to 70% of your final score at some departments, so even small improvements here have an outsized impact. Next, Mechanical Reasoning, the second-largest section (36 questions in 43 minutes) and the one most candidates find least familiar going in. Math and Reading are shorter sections (31 and 27 questions) and tend to rely on skills most candidates already have some familiarity with, so they're the most efficient to review last if time is tight. If you have more than a few days, work through all four PrepPack sections at least once for a baseline, then spend any remaining time on Human Relations and Mechanical.

Scheduled my test 6 days before the closing window and prepared using Job Test Prep! Was able to score in the high 80s! Had I not prepared with these practices, I may have not score as high as I did! Also I would not have been prepared and confident as I was taking the test!
