We've created a comprehensive QFD prep course designed to help you succeed. Our course closely mimics the actual test conditions and platform, allowing you to identify and improve your weaker areas. With this focused preparation, you'll be confident and ready to excel on test day.
Why preparation matters: QFD's Mechanical Reasoning and Core Abilities sections are strictly timed, delivered remotely under live webcam supervision, with no pens, notes, or calculators permitted. There's no pausing the clock to think something through or work out a calculation on paper. Our practice tests are timed to match those same real conditions, so when test day comes, the pressure of the countdown and the proctor won't be something you're feeling for the first time.

At JobTestPrep, we've helped thousands of candidates pass competitive hiring assessments since 1992. Our materials are designed by psychometric experts and updated based on real candidate feedback to reflect the latest test formats.
Hi, I'm Yedidya. I hold a B.A. in Psychology and am currently pursuing an M.A. in Organizational Psychology with a focus on psychometric assessment and testing methodology. I've been with JobTestPrep since 2020, where I amassed significant experience in helping candidates ace their civil service exams and land their ideal jobs.
My expertise in cognitive assessment design and test-taking strategy directly informs the QFD firefighter examination preparation materials on this page. I've worked extensively with the cognitive frameworks underlying professional aptitude testing, particularly mechanical reasoning, numerical reasoning, analytical and inductive reasoning, and written comprehension assessments. This experience allows me to create realistic practice materials that mirror the exact cognitive demands of QFD's Pearson VUE-delivered Online Cognitive Ability Test.
This page provides comprehensive preparation for the QFD firefighter written exam, with practice questions calibrated to match official test difficulty, detailed explanations of reasoning patterns, and strategic guidance to help you achieve a competitive score.

Tests your ability to understand and apply basic mechanical and physical concepts, such as gears, levers, pulleys, circuits, and fluid pressure, and to predict how a mechanical system will behave. QFD has not published a fixed question count or time limit for this component.
Part of the Core Abilities component. Tests your ability to work through arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and quick mental math, without a calculator, under a visible timer. QFD has not published a fixed question count or time limit for this component.
Part of the Core Abilities component. Tests your ability to read and process written material efficiently, identify key details, and answer questions based on what's written, under time pressure. QFD has not published a fixed question count or time limit for this component.
Part of the Core Abilities component. Tests your inductive and pattern-based reasoning: identifying the rule governing a sequence of shapes, colors, or positions, and applying it to determine what comes next. QFD has not published a fixed question count or time limit for this component.
No. This PrepPack is built specifically around the Online Cognitive Ability Test, the Mechanical Reasoning and Core Abilities components delivered through Pearson VUE. It does not include physical fitness preparation for the Beep Test or OFAT, or content for the Psychological Assessment, since those are separate stages of the QFD selection process with different formats entirely.
The free practice page gives you a small sample, one question per test type, so you can see the format before committing to anything. This PrepPack is the full preparation course: 47 timed tests and drills across both components, plus a complete guide, built for candidates who want thorough, structured practice rather than a quick preview.
Since QFD's Online Cognitive Ability Test measures speed and accuracy under time pressure as much as raw ability, we recommend starting as soon as you know your test date, rather than cramming in the final days. Working through the drills once, then repeating full-length timed simulations closer to test day, tends to build both accuracy and pacing more effectively than a single pass through the material.
The PrepPack reflects the current QFD name and test structure. QFES was renamed the Queensland Fire Department (QFD) on 1 July 2024, and this pack is built around the Online Cognitive Ability Test as currently administered under that name.
If your test is coming up fast, prioritize in this order: Human Relations first - it's the largest section (76 questions in 57 minutes) and can count for up to 70% of your final score at some departments, so even small improvements here have an outsized impact. Next, Mechanical Reasoning, the second-largest section (36 questions in 43 minutes) and the one most candidates find least familiar going in. Math and Reading are shorter sections (31 and 27 questions) and tend to rely on skills most candidates already have some familiarity with, so they're the most efficient to review last if time is tight. If you have more than a few days, work through all four PrepPack sections at least once for a baseline, then spend any remaining time on Human Relations and Mechanical.
