The MFS Online Assessment and Psychometric Testing is a pre-employment assessment used by the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) to screen Full-Time Firefighter applicants, delivered online and completed unsupervised from home, as Stage Three of the recruitment process - after the initial application and screening stages and before the in-person group exercises and Physical Aptitude Test.

MFS states this stage covers communication (verbal and written), problem-solving, mechanical reasoning, and decision-making with incomplete information. MFS doesn't publish the specific test formats or testing vendor used, though prep sites commonly describe this stage using labels like numerical, deductive, and inductive reasoning alongside a personality/behavioural component - these labels aren't confirmed by MFS directly.

Try our complete MFS Firefighter PrepPack and practice library, covering Numerical, Deductive, Inductive, and Mechanical Reasoning, plus a Personality practice course built around the key areas of the assessment.

Inside the Prep Course - Preview

We've created a comprehensive MFS Firefighter prep course designed to help you succeed. Our course gives you focused practice across the reasoning and mechanical skills MFS names as part of its online psychometric test, allowing you to identify and improve your weaker areas. With this focused preparation, you'll be confident and ready to excel on test day.

Why preparation matters: MFS's online psychometric test covers communication (verbal and written), problem-solving, mechanical reasoning, and decision-making with incomplete information. MFS hasn't published exact timing or format details for this stage, but candidates commonly report the assessment being timed and completed in one sitting, similar to most online cognitive tests of this kind. Our practice tests, covering Numerical, Deductive, Inductive, and Mechanical Reasoning, are timed to help you build the speed and accuracy needed under pressure, so when assessment day comes, working against the clock won't be something you're feeling for the first time.

What is the MFS Online Assessment and Psychometric Testing ?

The MFS Online Assessment and Psychometric Testing is a pre-employment assessment used by the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) to screen Full-Time Firefighter applicants, delivered online and completed unsupervised from home as Stage Three of the recruitment process - after the initial application and screening stages and before the in-person group exercises and Physical Aptitude Tests. MFS states this stage covers communication (verbal and written), problem-solving, mechanical reasoning, and decision-making with incomplete information.

MFS firefighters protect the community from the effects of fires, road crashes, dangerous substances, and other emergencies across metropolitan Adelaide and parts of regional South Australia. The role calls for strong problem-solving ability, physical fitness, teamwork, and the resilience to stay calm under pressure. Successful recruits complete approximately 16 weeks of training, held mainly at the Angle Park Training Centre with additional components at the Adelaide Metropolitan Fire Station, before being posted as relievers across MFS metropolitan stations. More detail on the role is available on MFS's own recruitment page.

Recruitment runs through a staged process: after submitting your online application and clearing initial screening (driver history, tattoo policy, and eligibility checks), applicants sit the online psychometric and aptitude test covered on this page. Candidates who clear this stage attend an in-person group exercise at an assessment centre, followed by the Physical Aptitude Test Stage 1 (PAT1), a progressive shuttle-run test requiring a level of 9.6 to pass. Next comes a panel interview using behavioural and situational questions, then the Physical Aptitude Test Stage 2 (PAT2), a pass/fail assessment of 11 simulated firefighting tasks completed within 32 minutes at the MFS Adelaide Fire Station. The process concludes with pre-employment checks, including medical examinations, an MR licence, National Criminal History Check, Working with Children Check, and referee checks.

What are the Sections of the MFS Firefighter Online Assessment and Psychometric Testing ?

Deductive Reasoning

Tests your ability to work through problems logically, applying given rules and information to reach conclusions that follow directly from what you're told - part of the problem-solving and decision-making skills MFS's online assessment covers.

Inductive Reasoning

Tests your ability to make decisions with incomplete information, spotting patterns and relationships among shapes or sequences to work out the underlying rule and predict what comes next.

Numerical Reasoning

Tests the numerical problem-solving skills MFS names as part of its online psychometric test, most commonly covering mental arithmetic, percentages, ratios, and reading data from tables and graphs under time pressure.

Mechanical Reasoning

Tests your understanding of how everyday mechanical systems move and work - covering areas like velocity, force and moment, fluid mechanics, wheels and pulleys, thermodynamics, electricity, and gears - directly matching the mechanical reasoning MFS names as part of its online psychometric test.
