California POST Exam

California has a Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), which sets the standards and training for law enforcement in the state. The POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) is the exam that was selected by the California POST. Most police departments in California use PELLETB to assesses the reading and writing skills required to become a police officer. The California POST test consists of three main categories: writing ability, reading ability and reasoning ability.


Other California Police Officer Exams

There are a some departments that require different police exams than the PELLETB. You should look at your specific department to see which exam you need to take. Here are a few departments that offer different exams.

CA Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) requires you to take a written exam. This exam consists of 125 questions that are in either multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank format. The sections on the CHP exam test your skills in spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. You are allotted 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam.

Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Police Department requires you to take a Personal Qualifications Essay (PQE) test. The PQE evaluates your skills in written communication. To further prepare, find out more about the LAPD exam.

San Diego

The San Diego Police Department requires you to take the San Diego Police Recruit Written Exam. This SDPD exam measures your reading comprehension, written communication and checking ability, decision making, and map reading.

San Francisco

The San Francisco Police Department requires you to take a FrontLine National Exam. The FrontLine exam has three parts: a video-based human relations test, a reading ability test, and a written language ability test.

  • A: You must first meet certain requirements before taking the PELLETB or any police exam. After you have passed the exam, you will take a physical ability test.
  • Q: How long are my test scores valid?
  • A: The scores do not expire. However, individual departments may decide how long a test score is valid.
  • Q: How often can I take the exam?
  • A: Each department has its own rules on how often you can take the test if you fail. For example, you must wait one month (30 days) before taking the PELLETB test again and six months for the LAPD written test.
