The ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) Online Aptitude Test is a pre-employment assessment used by ACTF&R to screen Recruit Firefighter applicants, delivered online through an external testing agency, and completed as Stage 2 of the recruitment process - after the initial application stage and before the Multi-Stage Fitness (BEEP) Test, assessment centre, and Physical Aptitude Test stages.

The aptitude test session assesses verbal, numerical, abstract, and spatial reasoning, then after completing this, applicants provide a written and video response to a question aligned with the selection criteria. Prep sites report the aptitude section is delivered through TestGorilla, though this isn't confirmed by ACTF&R directly.

What is the ACT Fire & Rescue Written Exam?

The ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) Online Aptitude Test is a pre-employment assessment used by ACTF&R to screen firefighter applicants, delivered online through an external testing agency as Stage 2 of the recruitment process - after the initial application review and before the Multi-Stage Fitness (BEEP) Test, assessment centre, and Physical Aptitude Test stages. The session assesses verbal, numerical, abstract, and spatial reasoning, followed by a written and video response to a question aligned with the selection criteria.

ACTF&R firefighters respond to emergencies across the ACT involving structure fires, bush and grass fires, vehicle fires, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, and confined space, trench, urban search and rescue, and vertical rescue operations, working alongside the ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Rural Fire Service, and ACT State Emergency Service as part of the ACT Emergency Services Agency. The role calls for teamwork, physical and emotional resilience, and strong communication skills, and successful recruits commit to 20 weeks of training at the ESA's Hume Training Centre. More detail on the role is available on ACTF&R's own careers page.

Recruitment runs through a staged process: after you apply through Jobs ACT, qualified applicants are invited to the online aptitude test covered on this page, followed by a written and video response to a selection-criteria question. Candidates who clear this stage move on to the BEEP Test, a shuttle-run cardiovascular test where a level of 9.6 must be achieved to progress, then an assessment centre for teamwork exercises and an introductory interview, the Physical Aptitude Test (PAT), formal interviews, and finally medical and psychometric evaluation. The aptitude test is conducted online through an external agency, so it can be completed from anywhere.

ACT Fire & Rescue Test Practice Questions And Answers

Inside the Prep Course - Preview

We've created a comprehensive ACT Fire & Rescue prep course designed to help you succeed. Our course closely mimics the actual test conditions and platform, allowing you to identify and improve your weaker areas. With this focused preparation, you'll be confident and ready to excel on test day.

Why preparation matters: ACTF&R's online aptitude test is strictly timed, covering verbal, numerical, abstract, and spatial reasoning in a single sitting, with no pausing the clock to think something through and no going back to a section once it ends. Our practice tests are timed to match those same real conditions, so when assessment day comes, the pressure of the countdown won't be something you're feeling for the first time.

What are the Sections of the ACT Fire & Rescue Firefighter Test?

Written & Video Response

After completing the aptitude test, you'll respond in writing and on video to a question aligned with ACT Fire & Rescue's selection criteria, assessing your communication skills and understanding of the role.

ACT Fire & Rescue Test FAQs

Start with the guide for each section to understand what's being tested, then work through the practice tests under timed conditions. Review every explanation, even for questions you got right, so you understand the fastest way to reach the answer, not just the correct one.

Begin with the Cognitive Ability practice course, since it makes up the bulk of the aptitude test. Move to the Situational Judgement practice once you're comfortable with timing, then use the Values Guide to prepare for how your responses and interview should reflect ACT Fire & Rescue's expectations.

Practice every test with a visible timer, even in your first attempts. Skip questions you're stuck on and return to them if time allows, rather than losing minutes on a single question.

No. The aptitude test measures reasoning ability, not knowledge you've memorized. Preparation works best when it builds pattern recognition and speed, not recall.

Repeat each test until you can consistently finish within the time limit and understand your mistakes. Retaking a test without reviewing the explanations first has limited value.

Run full timed practice sessions back to back, as close to real conditions as possible, and review your weakest areas rather than starting new material.
