FRNSW Practice Test & Video Interview Prep Course
The FRNSW online psychometric assessment is a pre-employment assessment used by Fire and Rescue NSW to screen recruit firefighter candidates, covering Cognitive Aptitude, Mechanical Reasoning, and Emotional Intelligence, delivered through the test provider Criteria.
The three tests run separately: the Cognitive Aptitude Test (CCAT) is 50 questions in 15 minutes, the Mechanical Reasoning Assessment (CMRA) is 30 questions in 15 minutes, and the Emotional Intelligence test (Emotify) is a game-based assessment made up of three interactive tasks taking around 20 minutes. It's a competitive, time-pressured set of tests rather than a specialist-knowledge one, so pacing and familiarity with the format matter as much as the content itself. The assessment is completed online from home, supported by live remote proctoring via webcam, microphone, and screen-sharing, alongside a separate video interview stage.

What are the Three Sections of the FRNSW Firefighter Test?
Mechanical Reasoning Test
Tests your ability to understand and apply basic mechanical and physical concepts, such as gears, levers, pulleys, wheels, and pressure, and to predict how a mechanical system will behave. 30 questions, 15 minutes.
Cognitive Aptitude Test
Tests your numerical, verbal, and abstract reasoning ability, working through problems quickly and accurately under a visible timer. 50 questions, 15 minutes.
Emotional Intelligence Test
Tests your ability to accurately perceive, understand, and manage emotions through three short interactive tasks, such as identifying the emotion shown on a person's face. Around 20 minutes in total.
FRNSW Firefighter Assessment Prep FAQs
No. This PrepPack is built for the psychometric testing stage of the recruitment process, the Cognitive Aptitude, Mechanical Reasoning, and Emotional Intelligence tests, plus the video interview. The PAT, Assessment Centre, and Medical Assessment are separate stages later in the process, assessed differently, and aren't covered here.
Start with the full simulation to see where you stand across all three tests under real time pressure. Then spend your remaining time on whichever test scored lowest, and use your final days on the video interview simulations to sharpen your answers, since all parts of Step 2 need to be strong enough to progress you to the PAT.

The content was helpful and relevant, I just wish it was longer and included more for the price. I feel like I didn't get much help out of the practice exam.

Scheduled my test 6 days before the closing window and prepared using Job Test Prep! Was able to score in the high 80s! Had I not prepared with these practices, I may have not score as high as I did! Also I would not have been prepared and confident as I was taking the test!
