The Journeyman Plumber exam is a proctored licensing exam administered by your state board, required to work independently as a licensed plumber in the United States. It is a formal code-knowledge examination based on the plumbing code your state has adopted, either the International Plumbing Code (IPC) or the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), and passing it earns you a state journeyman plumber license, recognized by employers and licensing authorities statewide.

  • The exam is tested across 80 to 125 multiple-choice questions depending on your state, covering plumbing law and board rules, definitions, general regulations, fixtures, water heaters, water supply and distribution, sanitary drainage, vents, traps and interceptors, storm drainage, indirect waste, and fuel gas. Writing time runs 3 to 4 hours, also set by your state.
  • The passing score is 70% to 75% depending on your state board, with the exact number of correct answers needed scaling to that state's total question count. There is no published national domain minimum, since each board sets its own weighting, but a large share of questions are application-based, applying a code section to a scenario, not simple recall. Field experience alone is not enough.
  • The exam is open book: you bring the edition of the IPC or UPC your state has adopted. However, candidates who sit the exam without proper prep and having rarely used their code book under time pressure are among the most common first-attempt failures. Water-supply and drainage sizing calculations, along with the less-common code sections, are consistently flagged as the hardest areas.

Why You Need Timed, Simulated Practice to Pass the Journeyman Plumber Exam

✓
Open book doesn’t mean easy: with 80 to 125 questions in as little as 3 hours, you have barely two minutes a question, no time to hunt through the code
✓
Years on the job teach you how to do the work, not exactly where it’s written in the IPC or UPC, that’s a different skill entirely
✓
Knowing the code isn’t the test, finding it fast under a ticking clock is, and that speed only comes from timed practice, not reading
✓
Walk in already knowing exactly where to look, so your limited time goes to answering questions, not flipping pages
✓
Every question is checked against the current code edition and refined year after year from real candidates’ results, not generated once by a prompt and left untested

What Are the Main Challenges of the Journeyman Plumber Exam?

The journeyman plumber exam is challenging because it tests your ability to recall, interpret, and apply specific plumbing code provisions accurately - across a wide range of topics, under time pressure, often with an open code book that only helps if you know how to navigate it quickly. Candidates with years of field experience fail regularly because hands-on installation knowledge does not automatically translate into exam performance. Candidates who prepare only with static journeyman plumber practice test questions without timed, full-length simulations consistently underperform those who train under real exam conditions.

Journeyman Plumbing Certificate Prep FAQs

Start with the diagnostic test. It covers all major exam topics and gives you a scored breakdown of where you stand before you invest time in practice. Use the results to prioritize which topic-based practice tests to tackle first rather than working through the material in order.

<p>Most candidates need four to eight weeks of structured preparation depending on their baseline knowledge and how many hours per week they can commit. The diagnostic test will give you a realistic picture of how much work you need to do before you are ready to sit the real exam.</p>

Yes - deliberately. The simulations are calibrated to be harder than the actual exam so that the real test feels familiar rather than overwhelming on exam day. Candidates who complete both full simulations before sitting the real exam consistently report higher confidence and better results.

Not necessarily. A better approach is to complete the diagnostic first, work through the topic tests in your weakest areas, then take Simulation 1 as a mid-preparation benchmark. Use your simulation score to identify remaining gaps, complete the remaining topic tests, then take Simulation 2 as your final exam-readiness check.

Yes. The questions are written to reflect the way the real exam uses the IPC and UPC - testing whether you can apply code provisions correctly, not just whether you have memorized them. Practicing with these questions alongside your code book is the best way to build the navigation speed the timed exam demands.
