Minnesota Police Exam Prep

Thinking of becoming a police officer in Minnesota? Minnesota is unique in its licensing system for peace officers. Minnesota requires those aspiring to work in law enforcement to complete an educational program and pass a state board exam. Licensing itself only occurs when eligible candidates are appointed to a peace officer position. Licensing is a cooperative process between the POST Board, the hiring agency, and the candidate.

Minnesota POST

The Minnesota POST Board's Peace Officer Licensing Exam has five learning objectives. Category one contains information on Practical Applications and Techniques, category two contains Criminal Justice System: Civil and Criminal Law, category three pertains to Community Policing, category four includes Victims and Victims' Rights, and category five includes Leading, Managing and Communicating. The Peace Officer Licensing Exam is divided so that 33% of the questions are taken from category 1; 33% from category 2; and 11% from categories 3, 4, and 5.

Minnesota State Trooper

To become a Minnesota State Trooper, you must take a written exam. The exam the state's police departments use is the Wonderlic (WPT) Examination. This is a pass/fail exam, and you will learn immediately after completing the exam whether or not you passed.

Other Minnesota Police Entry-Level Exams

Periodically, police departments conduct written tests to establish an eligibility list. That information is posted with the Minnesota POST Board, as well as on the city’s website.

If you are interested in working for the Plymouth Police Department, you must register for the written test. All written tests are scored by CWH Research, Inc. If you took the CWH test for other Minnesota agencies, and your score meets the requirements, you will not need to re-take the test.
