FCTC Firefighter Exam FAQs

The Firefighter Candidate Testing Center written exam is harder than most candidates expect. The minimum passing score is 70%, but competitive California fire departments often set their own higher thresholds to advance to the oral interview stage. The real challenge isn't any single question - it's performing across all four sections simultaneously under strict time pressure, including a 30-minute reading period you can't revisit once it ends. Candidates who arrive without structured FCTC written test prep consistently underperform, especially on the recall and FCTC mechanical reasoning questions sections.

No - calculators are strictly prohibited on the FCTC math questions section. You must solve all 20 mathematical word problems by hand using only the scratch paper provided on test day. Questions cover algebra, fractions, percentages, ratios, and geometry applied to real firefighting scenarios. This makes timed practice under exam-like conditions essential. You can review the full FCTC written test format on the official FCTC online website.

It depends on the section:

  • Technical Reading: You ARE permitted to take notes, highlight, and underline directly on the provided essay packet during the 30-minute study period. However, these materials are collected before the test begins.

  • Video Recall: You are STRICTLY PROHIBITED from taking notes while the videos are playing. Pencils must remain on the desk during the video scenarios.

A static FCTC study guide or PDF gives you content knowledge - but the FCTC written exam is a test of performance under pressure, not just knowledge. The video recall section requires you to watch scenarios and answer questions from memory, something no PDF can simulate. Our PrepPack replicates the full exam experience with timed simulations covering FCTC video questions, FCTC mechanical reasoning questions, and math - training your brain to perform under the exact same conditions you'll face on test day. The official FCTC test prep page itself acknowledges that adequate preparation in the weeks and months before the exam significantly increases your odds of success. Practicing with a static guide is like training for a marathon by reading about running.

Over 170 California fire departments use the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center written exam as part of their hiring process, ranging from major agencies like LAFD, SFFD, LA County Fire, and San Diego Fire-Rescue to dozens of smaller regional departments up and down the state. You can view the full list of participating departments on the official FCTC online website.

Your FCTC written test score is valid for 12 months from the date you take it. Once you pass both the written test and the CPAT physical test, you are placed on the FCTC SEL - a shared eligibility list used by 170+ California fire departments. This means you take the test once and your score is visible to every participating department statewide, removing the need to sit separate written exams for each agency. However, individual departments retain the right to set their own passing score above the standard 70%, so scoring as high as possible on your first attempt matters.

The FCTC SEL (Statewide Eligibility List) is the central hiring database maintained by the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center. Once you pass both the FCTC written test and the CPAT, your name and scores are added to the SEL and made available to 170+ participating California fire departments - including major agencies like LAFD, SFFD, and LA County Fire. Departments use the SEL to identify and directly contact qualified candidates when openings arise, meaning one passing score can open doors across the entire state. Because your score expires after 12 months, thorough preparation with quality FCTC online practice resources before your first attempt is the most efficient path to getting on the list and staying competitive.
