New York State Firefighter Exam

To become a firefighter in NYS you must take one of two tests, depending on where you live. Both exams have an overall time allowance of 5 hours.

For all Municipalities except White Plains, Mt. Vernon, and New Rochelle, your exam will cover four subject areas:

  • Ability to Learn and Apply Information.
  • Basic Arithmetic.
  • Reading Comprehension. 
  • Situational Judgment.

For White Plains, Mt. Vernon, and New Rochelle Only, your exam will cover five subject areas:

  • Mechanical reasoning
  • Understanding and interpreting written material pertaining to fire
  • Solving problems involving numbers
  • General science
  • Reasoning clearly and selecting a proper course of action in firefighting situations

New York City Firefighter Exam

To become part of the FDNY you must take a written exam developed by PSI. The exam consists of Reading, Listening, Problem Solving and Basic Arithmetic. Learn more on the FDNY Written Exam here.
