Our  PrepPack™ Advantage

Our various PrepPacks™ aim to mirror the real mechanical aptitude test as closely as possible, while providing you comprehensive explanations to every answer. Here is what you need to know before getting started:

Who Needs to Take the Test?

The test is geared for those entering a wide range of specialties, including auto mechanics, aircraft technicians, machine operators, firefighter school, the military, and more.

Style of Questions:

Each question will include an image depicting a mechanical or electrical scenario. These may consist of kinetic/potential energy, friction and forces, acceleration, gravity, etc. and more.

Test Topics:

There is a wide range of topics which may be included in your mechanical reasoning tests. With JobTestPrep, you can seamlessly move between all subject matters to familiarize and perfect your knowledge of any subject. Consider that the test, as offered in different industries, may emphasis various topics, so when preparing think which items most relate to your field.

  • Electricity – Circuits -series, parallel, and diagrams; Magnetism, Voltage, currents, resistance, capacitors, and charges.
  • Mechanics -Forces and motions – pressure, frictions, moments, acceleration, gravity; Energy – kinetic and potential, and transformation, work and power; and Levers, screws, gears, pulleys, springs, etc.
  • Other Calculation of areas; Conventions and units; Tools and terminology

How is the test scored

The test score will be tallied alongside the interview score, and then combined to place you on a spectrum with other test-takers. The spectrum is divided into four tiers, including 70-79, 80-89, 90-95, and 96-100. It is essential to aim to get into the third tier, as you do not want to be among the weakest candidates.

Test Time Frame

Depending on the number of questions included in the test, you will be given between 25-60 minutes to finish the test. This translates into about 30 seconds per question.

Tips to help you better prepare for the real test

Here are some excellent tips, which can help guide you as you begin your preparations for the test.

Tip 1: Questions will contain underlying physical principles, like the gear ratios, which can be applied to other questions.

Tip 2: Remember that physical principles are what matter on the test, so unless directly instructed, ignore minor details like air resistance or self-weight.

Tip 3: If you get stuck on a question dealing with effects, try to think in extremes like 10km vs. 10cm in a question regarding short and long paddle rowing.

Tip 4: On some questions, it will be helpful to draw a picture or label with relevant signs to figure out the mechanical concept.

Tip 5: Other questions necessitate formula memorization, thus ensure to review key formulas.

Tip 6: Do not waste time by dwelling on questions you do not know, move on, and come back if you have time.
