Washington Police Exams

Each police department may choose which exam they require you to take. Below is a list of departments that require different exams.


FrontLine National Testing System Exam

To become a police officer in Bellevue, Bellingham, Kennewick, Monroe, Oak Harbor, Pullman and Yakima County you need to take the Ergometrics FrontLine National Testing System Exam. The exam consists of 2 tests: a Video Based Human Relations and Judgment Test and the Writing Test. You will have 3 and a half hours to complete the exam.

Video Based Human Relations and Judgment Test: You will watch a part of a video and then have to choose the best action to take in a multiple-choice format. You will have 10 seconds to answer the question. The video does not stop playing. This section lasts for 90 minutes.

The Writing Test is broken down into two parts. The first part is writing a report and the second part is a 45 multiple-choice question writing and reading test. You will have 10 mintues to write your report and 25 minutes to answer the questions.


Everett

To be a police officer in Everett, WA you have to take the Entry-Level Police Officer written test. The exam is a 100-item, multiple-choice exam. It measures basic abilities needed to succeed as a police officer. The exam tests your abilities in Language Skills (reading comprehension, writing skills), and Situational Reasoning (inductive and deductive reasoning, and name and number matching).


Olympia & Vancouver

To become a police officer in Olympia or Vancouver, you need to take the Law Enforcement Selection Tool (LST) police test designed by IO Solutions. The exam measures various areas related to law enforcement officer performance. The test is made up of two areas: cognitive abilities and non-cognitive traits. The LST police test contains 120 non-cognitive test questions and 70 cognitive questions. you will have a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam. The non-cognitive section of the exam has two main categories work styles (personality test) and biographical data. The questions will be either behavioral statements or multiple-choice questions. The cognitive abilities section of the exam assess seven different areas: deductive reasoning, flexibility of closure, inductive reasoning, information ordering, spatial orientation, written expression and written comprehension. These areas have been proven to be necessary to be successful as a law enforcement officer. To join the Vancouver police department you must score a minimum of 70% on the exam.


Seattle

To become a Seattle police officer you have to take a Civil Service Exam. The exams that they require you to take are a Written and Video test. To pass the Seattle Police exam you must receive a 65 or higher.

The written test focuses on memorization, general knowledge, grammar, spelling, multi-tasking and reading comprehension. You will have 1.5 hours to prepare for the memorization part of the test. The test itself has 110 multiple-choice questions. You will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the exam. You need to get 80% correct to pass the exam.

The video test is the Ergometrics FrontLine Video Test. The video exam consists of approximately 46 multiple-choice scenarios of Police Officers responding to various situations.


Washington State Trooper

To become a Washington State Trooper you must take the Entry Level Police Officer Examination created by Darany and Associates. It measures skills needed to be a successful police officer. You will have two hours to complete the exam. There are 169 multiple choice questions spread out over 4 sections: Accuracy of Observation, Written Communication Skills, Reading with Understanding, and Biodata.
