What Do You Need to Know about Working and Living in the United Arab Emirates?
The United Arab Emirates, with its unlimited petroleum resources, stable economy, booming infrastructure, high, tax-free salaries, and luxurious working benefits, has long been attracting job seekers. The United Arab Emirates differ from other countries in several respects – education, living accommodation, health insurance, visa requirements, traditions and public etiquette.
Education. Education is free and mandatory for all children from 6 years old. Local children can study for free at schools and universities. Rules are, however, different for non-UAE citizens: they pay fees for the education of their children. Public universities, run by the UAE government and monitored by the ministry of education, are not open to foreigners. While the UAE citizens can study both in public and private universities, only the second option is available for expats. Work Permit. If you are seeking employment in the UAE, you need to receive a work visa. To come to the country for a visit is possible on a tourist or a visitor visa, which is valid for 30 days, but to work, you need to have a temporary work visa. This visa is valid for 90 days and renewable for another 90 days. If you want to work longer in the UAE and subsequently receive a residence permit, your potential employer or sponsor should apply for your work visa. Note that there are different types of work permits. If you are investing money in some business in the UAE or if you work in partnership with other businessmen, you will need a Permit for working as a license holder. It is crucial to keep in mind that the type of visa you will need to obtain depends on other factors as well, not only on the type of work you will do. Your nationality and individual situation are also taken into account when you apply for a work permit.
Living Accommodations. Living in the United Arab Emirates is expensive. Due to the influx of foreign workers, prices of apartments are constantly increasing. Other large expenses that you need to factor in when considering applying for a job in the UAE, are the education of your children and private healthcare. If you are weighing what accommodation to have, note that, according to the law of the country, you cannot purchase property there. But you can rent a wide range of properties from an apartment to a villa and a hotel apartment. Local brokers can help you find a suitable accommodation, once you arrive in the country.
Healthcare. The UAE offers complete medical coverage to all its citizens. Foreign workers, however, need to have health insurance.
Public Etiquette. As an Islamic country, the UAE allows its non-Muslim residents to practice their religion.
