About the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE)

The FTCE is used to assess those interested in becoming a teacher in Florida. The test measures the ability to demonstrate a mastery level of the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective teacher or educational leader.

There are three different types of FTCE: the General Knowledge test, the Professional Education test, and the Subject Area Examinations (SAE). The Professional Education test is a test of pedagogy and professional practice, and there are 41 different test SAE.


FTCE General Knowledge Test

The FTCE General Knowledge Test (GKT) assesses the skills and knowledge future teachers need to begin effective careers. The GKT consists of four subtests:

  • Essays Subtest – For the essay, you must choose between two topics. You have 50 minutes to write and edit an essay. You are being tested on ideas, focus, organization, style, and mechanics.
  • English Language Skills (ELS) Subtest – This subtest is 40 minutes long and consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. You are tested on your knowledge of language structure, vocabulary, and English conventions.
  • Reading Subtest – This subtest is 55 minutes long and consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. You are tested on your knowledge of key ideas & details, craft & structure, and integration of information & ideas—all based on texts.
  • Mathematic Subtest – This subtest is 100 minutes long and consists of 45 multiple-choice questions. You are tested on your knowledge of number sense, concepts & operations, geometry, measurement, algebraic thinking, the coordinate plane, probability, statistics, and data interpretation.

FTCE FAQ

What is the FTCE Testing fee?

To take the FTCE, you need to pay $130 (any combination of subtests). If you fail, you will need to pay a retake fee of $150 (any combination of subtests).

What are the test dates for the FTCE?

The FTCE exam is available year round by appointment on Monday through Saturday (excluding holidays).

When will I receive my score?

You will receive your test scores four weeks after you take the test.

What is a passing score on the General Knowledge (GK) Test?

The GK test has four subtests: GK Essay, GK English Language Skills (ELS), GK Reading, and GK Mathematics. Each subtest is administered, scored, and reported independently.

The writing subtest (GK Essay) is scored holistically by two human raters.

The passing score for the GK Essay is at least 8 out of 12 points. Each multiple-choice subtest (ELS, Reading, and Mathematics) requires a scaled score of at least 200 to pass.

If I fail the test, when can I retake it?

You may retake any test, subtest, or section 31 days after your most recent attempt.

How long does the professional certification last?

The professional certification lasts for five school years.
