The SoCalGas's Hiring Process

Interview Questions for Technical Positions at the SoCalGas

The hiring process at the SoCalGas is manifold. In addition to the Personality Test and the Red Battery Test, you will have two or three interviews, if, of course, the results of your tests are satisfactory. The first interview is usually conducted on the phone. In it, a Human Resources representative will discuss with you your education, your working history, and the company’s structure.

The face-to-face interview is held at the SoCalGas’ headquarters and has a form of a panel. During this interview, you will speak with four or five of your prospective managers and group leaders. They will ask you mostly behavioral and situational questions in addition to those designed to gauge your work experience and verify the information on your résumé. Brush up your knowledge of mechanical and technical concepts, because, as a candidate for a technical or engineering position, you will be asked technical questions as well.

If you impress your prospective supervisors, you will be invited to yet another interview with the Vice President of the SoCalGas. Questions commonly posed to applicants for technical positions at the company are listed below:

  • What development tools have you used?
  • Give an example of where you have applied your technical knowledge in a practical way.
  • Tell me about your greatest success in using logic to solve an engineering problem.
  • What are you doing to stay current with the latest technology?
  • What are your technical certifications?
  • What do you do to maintain your technical certifications?
  • What technical websites do you follow?
  • What are your IT strengths and weaknesses?
  • What is ETL and when should it be used?
  • What is the role of SNMP?

Craft smart, clear answers to these and similar questions before you meet your interviewers in person. Having winning answers ready in advance will allow you to appear self-assured and knowledgeable during the interview. To strengthen the positive impression that, equipped with clever answers, you are likely to make on the SoCalGas’ recruiters, make sure also to go to the company website and read about its mission and business structure.

The SoCalGas’ Technical Test – Red Battery

The SoCalGas offers the Technical Test – Red Battery to job candidates who are competing for engineering apprenticeship, craft apprenticeship, or technical training. Comprising four sections, the Technical Test assesses applicants’ mechanical aptitude and their knowledge of mechanical concepts and principles. It is also a reliable measurement of their logical and symbolic reasoning and reading comprehension.

The Mechanical Comprehension Test – This test evaluates how well you understand physical and mechanical concepts and principles of their operations. It also estimates whether you can apply logical and mechanical reasoning to practical environment. The Red Battery test covers as many as 12 content areas that, among others, include such topics as tools, pulleys, springs, gears, levers, and electrical circuits.  In addition to demonstrating your knowledge of operating principles behind these concepts, you may also be required to calculate the force used to operate a certain tool. On the test, you will encounter such mechanical scenarios and problems as friction, pressure, sound, fluids, gravity, force, and kinetic and potential energies. They will be presented in the form of diagrams accompanied with 36 questions. You will have 20 minutes to analyse these diagrams and select right answers among multiple choices.

The Symbolic Reasoning Test – This test measures how well you manipulate symbols in accordance with logical and mathematical rules. On the test, applicants will read logical propositions expressed in the form of mathematical problems, formulated, however, not verbally but only visually. Your task will be to draw valid logical conclusions from these propositions. In order to do so, you will need to identify logical connections between given signs and apply to them mathematical rules. After this, you will need to judge the logical validity of the statement by choosing between the three alternative answers – “True,” “False,” and “Indeterminate.” You will be given 5 minutes to solve 30 of such problems.

The Reading Comprehension Test – This test seeks to estimate how well you understand written texts. You will be given to read a couple of short passages, accompanied by questions about them, answers to which you will need to choose from several alternatives. There are 23 questions overall. This test is a speeded one, limited to ten minutes.

The Problem-Solving Test – This test evaluates how you solve problems told in words by using arithmetic operations. The test will usually tell you about people who either spend money on goods or receive money for certain services. You will need to calculate how much money these people lose or gain in specified situations. Mathematical operations will include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. You will be given 10 minutes to solve 25 of such problems.

What Are The Jobs Requiring the Technical Test?

The Technical Test – Red Battery is taken by applicants for the positions of engineering apprenticeship, craft apprenticeship, or technical training. Engineers, craft apprentices, and technicians are tech savvy and employed in the technological field. They not only have good knowledge of technological principles but also understand their practical application.

Classified as highly-skilled or semi-skilled, engineers and technicians work in many industries, ranging from hi-tech to medical, dentistry, and theatrical. They must have a high level of professionalism and require up to 8 years of training. The Technical Test – Red Battery measures this technical professionalism with precision. Acing the test can, therefore, become a springboard for a successful career at the SoCalGas. Practice with JobTestPrep’s exclusive resources and make your plans to work in the company come to fruition.
