The Hiring Process

Personal Information

This section contains simple questions regarding job requirements as well as personal information questions. You will be asked for your personal details, work history, availability, and some references (optional). Once you completed the personal information section, you will be asked to take the assessment tests.

The Petco Assessment tests

A major part of the hiring process is the mandatory Petco Assessment Tests you must take online immediately after filling out the application. The tests usually take about 30-40 minutes to complete. It consists of two sections, a personality and a situational judgment test (SJT). Depending on how you score on these tests will determine whether or not you move to the In-Person Interview. With so many applicants, Petco uses these tests to weed out candidates quickly. With our tips, study guides and practice tests, you'll be sure to put yourself ahead of the competition and ensure you land the job you're looking for.

Performing well on these tests is not only critical for advancing to the next stages of the hiring process, but it is crucial as well to your performance in person interview. By answering the assessment test questions correctly, you gain a deeper understanding of the values and principles Petco is searching for and you can then blend those into your interview answers. This shows a real identification with the companies' goals and this will boost your CV to the top of the candidate list.

The Petco In-Person Interview

After carefully sifting through the Petco Assessment Test results, Petco will call back the employees that scored well for an in-person interview. They will call by phone, and start the conversation with a few basic questions, such as “Why do you want a Petco career?” or “What do you hope to gain from employment at Petco?” After that, they’ll schedule a time for you to come into the store and interview, usually two or three days from the phone call. Make sure you arrive at your interview at least 15 minutes early.

Petco relies heavily on these tests to predict how their employees will react, especially in tense situations with customers and co-workers. They want employees who communicate well and will help maintain a healthy workplace environment. They want people who are calm and decisive and come to their decisions thoughtfully and thoroughly with both the customers' and companies' interest in mind. Here's a few examples:

"What is the first step in learning about a new product?"
