Firefighter Requirements

Though firefighter requirements vary among different departments, there are some general requirements that are necessary for all candidates applying to become firefighters:

  • High school diploma or GED/equivalent
  • At least 18 years old (in certain states 21)
  • Clean (no criminal) record
  • Valid and clean driver's license

In addition to the above requirements, many fire departments require candidates to already be certified in (or be in the process of becoming certified) emergency medical technicians (EMT). If you are not yet a certified EMT, you will most likely be required to obtain this certification upon being hired.
