Nevada Firefighter Exams

Each department or county may choose which firefighter exam they require candidates to pass. The exam may be provided by an assessment company.

Northern Nevada/California F.I.R.E.

The Northern Nevada/California Firefighter Inter-agency Recruitment and Examination is a screening and testing program sponsored by a consortium of Northern Nevada/California Fire Departments. It uses standard testing procedures for entry level firefighters and firefighter/paramedics.

The consortium is administered by the collaborative efforts of the fire departments of Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, North Tahoe Fire Protection District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, and the Carson City Fire Department. Carson City Human Resources manages the recruitment process. The exam they require you to take is the FPSI National Fire Select Test (NFST). Learn more about the NFST to prepare for the exam.


To join the Reno fire department, you must take the Darany written exam. The Darany Exam consist of 160 multiple-choice questions divided into six sections. The sections you will be tested on are: Following Oral Instructions; Observation & Memory Skills; Reading with Understanding; Mechanical Reasoning Skills; Computational Ability; and Biodata.
