Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium

The Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium typically conducts a joint testing process every year during the month of June for the position of entry-level firefighter. A passing score on the MFFTC’s test is only one requirement to becoming a firefighter. Each department may have additional qualifications and requirements.

MFTC consists of the following departments:

  • Big Sky Fire Department
  • Billings Fire Department
  • Bozeman Fire Department
  • Butte Fire Department
  • Great Falls Fire/Rescue
  • Helena Fire Department
  • Lockwood Rural Fire District
  • Miles City Fire Department
  • Missoula Fire Department
  • Missoula Rural Fire District
  • Central Valley Fire District

Hiring Process

The hiring process consists of two parts: a written and a physical ability test. A passing score of 70% or better of the written portion is required before you can move on to the physical ability portion of the testing process.


The Written Test

The written test assesses a range of characteristics and personal traits. Some of the elements include:

  • Ability to learn and apply new information
  • Sound judgement and problem-solving ability
  • Observation ability 
  • Ability to understand technical concepts
  • Cooperativeness Ability
  • Sense of responsibility
  • Service-mindedness and conscientiousness

The written exam has 80-100 questions, which you will be allowed up to 2 hours to complete (based on 100 question test). A study guide will be distributed 20 minutes prior to the test.
