Florida Firefighter Exams

Each department or county may choose which entry level exam you need to take to become a firefighter. The firefighter exams measure skills and abilities required to be a successful firefighter. Becoming familiar with the exam will get you one step closer to becoming a firefighter.

To become a Miami firefighter, you must take the Fire-Rescue Firefighter exam. The exam consists of two parts: the Lecture & Demonstration Test and the Written Comprehension Test. The exam takes 3 hours. The exam consists of three question types: multiple choice, agree-disagree and multiple list.

Lecture & Demonstration Test: This test measures your ability to read and understand written material and your ability to understand information by listening and observing. You will be given a “Reference Booklet for Lecture & Demonstration Test” along with additional information that will be presented in a video lecture. The demonstration will be by a trainer to a trainee on how to use a piece of equipment. You will be asked questions about what you have read, heard, and seen in the video during the lecture and demonstration.

Written Comprehension Test: The purpose of this part of the test is to measure your ability to read and understand written material. You will be asked to read some written materials that have been excerpted from a set of reference materials and then answer questions about the materials.

To join the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department (MDFR) you will need to take an Audio/Written Screening Test (AWST). The test is comprised of Math; Maps; Reading and Applying Technical Information; and Interpersonal Skills. Preparing for the MDFR firefighter test will help you get one step closer to joining the Miami-Dade Fire Department.

Orange County & Tampa
