Every fire department in Arizona may choose which firefighter exam it requires applicants to take. These exams may be provided by an assessment company. As such, you may find the same exam in different locations.
To join the Mesa Fire Department, you must take the Ergometrics FireTEAM Exam. This exam is divided into four tests: the Video-Based Human Relations Test, the Mechanical Aptitude Test, the Math Test, and the Reading Ability Test. The exam contains around 160 questions and has a time limit of 2 hours and 20 minutes.
To join the Phoenix Fire Department, you must take a recruit exam. The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, with a majority of the questions taken from a pre-test study guide provided at the time you apply. The test also includes reading comprehension and basic math questions. You are not allowed to use the study guide when taking the written exam.
To join either the Tempe or Tucson Fire Departments, you must take the National Fire Select Test by FPSI. This entry-level firefighter written test consists of two sections: a general aptitude test and a personality inventory. The general aptitude test measures various skills:
