The FE Mechanical Test, once called the EIT Exam (Engineer in Training),covers a wide range of subjects related to the fundamentals of engineering. It is designed by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), and more often than not, firms and companies will not entertain your candidacy without you first acquiring ABET accreditation and passing FE Mechanical Test. Additionally, even if your state does not require the FE Mechanical Engineering Test, its successful completion looks excellent on a resume and is highly recommended. Fundamentals of Engineering Mechanical test Structure:

Before you begin studying and practicing for your upcoming FE Mechanical Engineering Test, it is essential to get a feel for the overall structure of the test, including its timeframe, topics covered, number of questions per section, sample questions, and more.  Let’s begin.

 

NCEES FE Mechanical Test Format:

First, it is important to note that the test will include both SI (International System of Units) and its counterpart USCS (the US Customary System). So it is vital to practice converting SI to USCS and reverse if needed.

Secondly, the test will be administered electronically via a computer and will contain a total of 110 questions, which must be completed within a 6-hour time limit. It should be noted that the 6-hour test includes an optional 25-minute break, a short 8-minute tutorial, and a couple of minutes to sign an NDA.

 

Test Sections:

While reviewing all 15 test sections is beyond the scope of this introduction, we will provide a short preview of several articles in greater depth while giving the remaining subjects a brief mention. Considering that your job as a mechanical engineer will design power run machinery, the safety of both the public and individuals are very much in your hands. Comprehensive book and practical knowledge of the profession is critical.

The test is pass-fail and only three types of calculators are permitted for use throughout the testing. Casio fx-115 and fx-991; HP 33s and HP 35; and TI-30X and TI-36X models.

Electricity and Magnetism Section: This segment of the test may include 3-5 questions covering up to 5 topics. It would help if you had a thorough understanding of current and voltage laws, motors and generators, along with Charge, current, voltage, power, energy, AC circuits, and equivalent circuits.

Measurements, Instrumentation, and Controls Section: In this section, you’re your knowledge of block diagrams, system response, sensors, and measurement uncertainty will undoubtedly be challenged. Expertise in all these subtopics is important to ensure the proper production of the given product. You can expect 5-8 questions on the aforementioned topics.

Fluid Mechanics Section: This section will cover a wide range of topics related to the properties of fluids in a wide range of states along and fully understanding how they react and interact to relating forces. Make sure you have a clear understanding of internal and external flows, fluid properties and statics, incompressible and compressible flow,  Energy, impulse, and momentum among other topics. There will 9-14 questions.

Engineering Economics Section: Aside from the technical relating to the Fundamentals of Engineering, you will also need an understanding of the economics of the profession. Factoring in the time value of money, depreciation, economic analysis,  and cost, including incremental, average, sunk, and estimating will play an essential role in ensuring a better product and customer satisfaction. Expect here 3-5 questions.

How to Become a Professional Engineer:

There are a number of steps you must take before you can become a bonafide engineer.

  • Four Year Bachelor of Science Degree: You must have fulfilled all the requirements for an EAC/ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Tests: Next, Register and take your FE exam as close to graduation as possible. While the test can be taken at any time, taking it within 12 months of completing your accredited engineering program will bring you the highest chances of success. Additionally, you will also have to take a PE exam.
  • Work Experience: Lastly, you will need four years of engineering experience. Depending on your local, you may have to have a professional engineer as a supervisor.
