What Is the Hiring Process in the Hospitality and Travel Industry?

  1. Submit an online application, your resume, and a cover letter.
  2. Complete a personality assessment: Practice beforehand to ensure that you are conveying the right message to employers with your answers.
  3. Record a video interview: Treat this interview just like an in-person interview—dress the part, and prepare your answers ahead of time.
  4. Complete a short phone interview: This is a short interview to verify your personal and work-related information before you will be invited to face-to-face interview.
  5. Complete an in-person interview: The in-person interview is a crucial final step to getting hired.

Hiring Process for the Hostpitality and Travel Industry

What Will I Be Asked at Interviews?

You can expect to be asked competency-based questions about your work experience that will allow you to demonstrate your decision-making and problem-solving skills.

  • S: state the situation
  • T: explain your task(s)
  • A: describe the actions you took
  • R: summarize the result

The specific questions that you will be asked at your interview can vary based on the position for which you are applying. You should know why you are applying for the job, and what makes you a great candidate. Make a list beforehand of accomplishments or challenges that you have overcome that are relevant for this new job. You may also need to explain why you are leaving your current position, so be ready for that question as well.

Some tips for your hospitality and travel services interview:

  • Arrive early, but not too early—10-15 minutes before the scheduled time is best.
  • Dress the part! You should wear an outfit similar to what you will wear if you are hired.
  • Hospitality is all about making guests feel happy and welcomed. Don't forget to smile and show off your winning personality.
  • Check out our interview preparation materials, included in the Hospitality and Travel Bundle, for more tips.

What Tests Will I Have to Take?

Since hospitality and travel industry involve interaction with guests, if employers hire the wrong person, they risk having not only an inefficient worker but losing customers as well. For this reason, employers want to ensure that they hire the right person for the job, and they use assessment tests to weed out undesirable candidates. You may need to take any of the following tests, depending on the position for which you are applying:

  • Clerical Abilities Test
  • Situational Judgment Test
  • Personality Test

Study materials for all of these tests are included in JobTestPrep's Hospitality and Travel Bundle.
