About

On campuses in all five boroughs, CUNY public safety is a primary concern. Therefore, the written test for all law enforcement applicants covers basic skills, situational judgment and knowledge necessary for effective job performance.

CUNY civil service tests are used as qualifying and ranking tools in the hiring process for all public safety candidates. You must score at the 70% or higher percentile on the CUNY pre-employment written exam in order to be considered for the position. If your exam results are within the highest band, you will be among those candidates who are invited to participate in an interview, on your way to landing the position.

Successful exam preparation lets you know what to expect on the actual test, provides a review of the subject matter and gives you an understanding of the focus behind the questions on each topic covered in the Civil Service Exam. Our test prep program offers CUNY public safety practice tests, detailed explanations, study guide and helpful exam strategies.

CUNY Peace Officer Exam Format

The written Campus Peace Officer test is multiple-choice formatted. Passing this civil service test is required in order to continue along the hiring process. Expect written scenarios followed by questions and response alternatives. The knowledge, skills and abilities assessed are all job-related.

Campus Peace Officer Exam Content

Eleven primary skills are measured in the public safety test of the City University of New York. These abilities include:

  1. Judgment
  2. Observation
  3. Communication
  4. Following orders
  5. Customer service
  6. Listening
  7. Organization
  8. Dispute resolution
  9. Interviewing
  10. Telephoning

All the information that you need in order to answer all test items are contained in the scenarios and questions. It is not necessary to possess prior Peace Officer work experience, job-specific knowledge or training.

The CUNY Peace Officer test is the second phase in the hiring process. The first stage is an Application. After passing the exam, you will be placed within a scoring band on the eligibility list, encounter a medical screening, drug test, physical agility test, psychological screening, and background investigation. Candidates who pass all of the requirements and are in the top written exam band will be scheduled for an interview. The selection step after the interview is a job offer.

Work Experience Test

Some job titles, such as Campus Security Assistant, require a Work Experience Test. This exam presents job activity items that must be rated pursuant to prior work experience. You can prepare for an education and experience test by working on practice tests to familiarize yourself with the types of questions and exam format that you will face on the CUNY exam.
