What Is the Probation Assistant Exam?

To become an assistant to a probation officer, you must take the Probation Assistant exam. Some roles a probation assistant is required to do include investigating and counseling a team, as well as aiding one or more probation officers, record keepers, and/or interviewers. The exam measures your knowledge, skills, and abilities related to these tasks. Depending on where you apply, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or high school proficiency certificate.

What Do Those Who Score High Receive?

By scoring high on the test, you have a better change of gaining employment. Each department/state has different benefits. If you become an Probation Assistant, you can earn a minimum of $25,000 a year. You also receive benefits, such as health, dental, and life insurance. You also get paid vacation days and holidays.

The content of your Probation Assistant exam depends on your location. The test will most likely assess your abilities in office procedures; written communication; use of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation; review and analysis of documents; preparing clear and accurate reports; and principles of interviewing and problem solving. These skills are tested through various test sections. Some of the common test sections found on the exam are:

  • Interviewing – This section assesses your knowledge of the principles and practices employed in obtaining information through structured conversations. It also enables you to show your skills in solving problems that may arise during an interview.
  • Office Record Keeping – This section assesses your ability to read and interpret information in graphs, tables, and other formats to keep records.
  • Preparing Written Material – This sections asseses your ability to properly structure sentences and paragraphs.
  • Understanding and Interpreting Written Materials – This section assesses how well you understand written material. You are presented with a passage followed by questions that must be answered based on the information presented.

The Probation Assistant Hiring Process

The hiring process begins with the submission of your application. After submitting your application, you must take a written exam. After you have passed the written exam, you may have to take a medical and/or a psychological exam. You also have to pass a background check and possibly a drug test.
