What Is the Civil Engineer?   

Civil Engineers are engineers that specialize in designing, constructing, and maintaining roads, bridges, canals, airports, railways, and pipelines, among other works on our physical and naturally built environment. Civil Engineering is the second oldest and important engineering discipline after the military engineering. Unlike the military engineering, it takes place in the public sector of municipal and national government and in the private sector of companies and homeowners. To finish their projects successfully, Civil Engineers use the principles of geotechnical, structural, environmental, commercial, and industrial engineering.   

Although the Civil Engineering is a broad field, Civil Engineers usually have narrow specializations within it. Depending on their training, they may work in the following subdisciplines:

  • Construction Engineering – This sub-discipline of the Civic Engineering concerns itself with planning and fulfillment of projects, transportation of materials, and site development. Engineers specializing in construction engineering apply to their work the principles of hydraulic, environmental, and geotechnical engineering.
  • Environmental Engineering - This is sanitary engineering that also deals with hazardous waste management and environmental remediation. The main focus of Civil Engineers specializing is environmental engineering is on treatment of chemical, biological, and thermal wastes, purification of water and air, and cleaning of various contaminated sites.
  • Geotechnical Engineering – Engineers specializing in the geotechnical engineering study rock and soil that support engineering systems. As a rule, they are savvy in soil science, mechanics, and hydraulics, to name only few sciences in which they have expertise.
  • Structural Engineering – This branch of Civil Engineering deals with the structural design and structural analysis of buildings, bridges, tunnels, and aerostructures. What structural engineers do is measuring loads that act upon a structure and identifying the forces and stresses which arise in structures because of these loads. Their task is to design and build a structure that would support or resist these loads.
  • Transportation Engineering - Experts in this part of the Civil Engineering focus on moving people and objects efficiently and safely. They design and construct transportation infrastructure such as streets, canals, airports, and highways, among others.  

What Duties Do Civil Engineers Perform?

Civil Engineering is a highly broad category. Tasks that Civil Engineers fulfil are, therefore, various. As a Civil Engineer, you may be asked in your workplace to do the following:

  • Survey and analyze maps, reports, and plans and design projects, based on your analysis;
  • Take into account construction prices, environmental hazards, and regulations, when designing projects;
  • Analyze the results of soil testing and, based on the analysis, determine the adequacy and strength of foundations;
  • Analyze materials in buildings – concrete, wood, steel, and others;
  • Use software to design transportation and hydraulic systems according to standards accepted in the industry;
  • Oversee and perform operations and establish building locations, site layouts, grades, and elevations;
  • Repair and maintain public and private infrastructure.

What Education Should the Civil Engineer Have?  

Most of the Civil Engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, usually in one of its branches mentioned in the section above. They may also have a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology. Among the courses that would-be Civil Engineers take during their 3 or 4 years of studying are mathematics, statistics, mechanics, fluid dynamics, statics, to name only few of them. These courses have the form either of classroom lectures or laboratory works. Students also have practical classes in fieldwork.

After you have graduated from college, you will also need to earn the Professional Engineer (PE) license. To earn it, you will also need to receive a degree from a program accredited by ABET. You also need to have a passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. When engineers pass the FE exam, they become engineers in training or interns. After engineers in training have worked for a few years and gotten relevant experience, they can take the second exam – the Principles and Practice of Engineering.

Engineers with a license are called Professional Engineers. The license gives you more responsibilities and allows you to supervise the work of other engineers, approve design plans, and work with people. If you want to become a manager in your workplace, you will need to have a master’s degree or PhD.


What Qualities Should the Civil Engineer Possess?

Civil Engineers should have several professional skills and character traits to succeed in their profession. The list below contains some of these skills and qualities:

Math Skills – Civil Engineers should have good knowledge of calculus and trigonometry, because their work requires the use of mathematics in planning, designing, and analyzing buildings and physical objects.

Decision-Making Skills – Civil Engineers must make good and quick decisions based on their knowledge, work experience, and practices common in the field of civil engineering.

Problem-Solving Skills – Civil Engineers have to identify and analyze complex problems. After having identified and analyzed a problem, they need to find a cost-effective, elegant, and safe solution to it.
