What Is the Cashier?

The cashier is the person whose prime responsibility in the company is to receive and pay out money. Cashiers also process debit cards and make credit cards transactions either with customers or employees. They usually communicate with the general public and, therefore, have to be well-mannered, polite, and helpful. As representatives of the company, cashiers have to remain polite and pleasant, even if customers are disgruntled and behave rudely. Cashiers participate in the company’s objective to keep a customer satisfied and thus should always employ tact and patience when talking to clients. Cashiers should not lose their concentration even in strained situations, because a small mistake in calculation can lead to a serious problem and incur losses for the company for which they work. Any small mistake with money will also reflect badly on cashiers, because they are always expected to be precise in their calculations. Cashiers should also possess a working knowledge of a cash register, credit card terminal, scanner or any other cash and money handling technology used in the company. Cashiers also need to keep a clear, well-written reports of cash and credit transactions.

Duties of a cashier may vary depending on the organization for which you applied. For practically all organizations, from a small off-license shop to a large department store, an office, or a bank, require a cashier. The type and the size of the company for which you want to work will determine the specificity of your tasks and duties. Thus, if you work as a cashier in a small shop, you will need to make transactions and familiarize yourself well with the goods promoted on the shelves and stored in stock rooms. You may also need to memorize their prices and codes. You will also make sales referrals, cross-sell products, and introduce new ones to clients. Cashiers also issue receipts, make refunds, or redeem stamps and coupons. Knowing how to scan items and use a price gun is also important for a person working as a cashier. Sometimes, you may also be required to bag, box, or wrap the items you sell.

Another responsibility that you may have is to make orders of those items which are missing in your stock rooms, though often this will be a duty of a sales assistant working with you. Yet if your role is a combination of a cashier’s and a sales person’s positions, then you will need to keep track of sold goods, make orders of missing items, and do a lot of paperwork as well. As a cashier, you will also need to prepare a till for the working day and count a profit by the end of it. You will need to ensure that the amount of money contained in the till tallies with a report of sales you have done during the day. In bigger organizations such as banks and law offices, the volume of transactions and the amount of money that passes through cashiers’ hands are significantly larger as well. If you are applying for a cashier position in larger organizations, you will be required to be even more concentrated and accurate in your calculations, because you will manager much larger amounts of money than in a coffee shop or a fast food franchise.

What Qualities Should a Cashier Possess?

In most cases, to be a cashier does not require to have a degree. Yet you definitely must have strong numerical skills. Although calculations on the till are made automatically enabling you to see how much change a customer should receive, you still need to know arithmetic well to calculate correctly and not always rely on the calculator on the till. Knowing arithmetic will also help you count money at the end of the working day before you tally it with the report of your daily profit. Because you will also write reports and make orders of goods, you will need to have strong reading comprehension and writing skills. Ordering missing items may require logical thinking and quick decision-making. Working with customers, cashiers should also possess such qualities as patience and politeness. It is also good to be cheerful and engaging. You should remember that the ultimate goal of every company is to make a customer satisfied. As a cashier serving clients well, you will make the most meaningful contribution to their satisfaction.
