Sales Manager Hiring Process

  • Phone Screening: The first step in the process will be the phone screening conducted by the Human Resources Department. The goal will be to get to know you on a preliminarily and ensure that your story is a cohesive one. Be ready to answer short Q&A on your CV and technical background.
  • Hiring Manager Interview: Provided that you pass the HR gatekeeper, you will be invited for an interview with hiring manager. Be read to answer a range of technical and personality questions, which aim to better expose your weaknesses and failures and discover how you can best contribute to the organization.
  • Panel Interview: Passing a panel interview is all about not allowing them to ambush you. Be prepared to answer a wide range of questions from various departments. For instance, if you are trying out for a management position they may bring a rep from HR, accounting along with the hiring manager. Each will ask their own questions to ensure you fit into their agenda. HR will focus on behavioral questions, accounting will want to know if have a grasp pf budgets. Each area is important.

Key to answering Hard Questions

Sometimes we can get stuck on a question and it will destroy the entire interview. Here are some tips you can use to answer any tough question and stay on track.

  • Stay Calm: Make sure you stay calm and do not just say the first thing that comes to mind. If need be asked them to repeat the question or take a second and say “that’s a great question, give me a second to consider that.” This will give you a moment to collect your thoughts.
  • Transitional Adverbs Are your Friends: Sometimes you can think about a process in order to give a clear and cohesive answer to a tough question. To provide extra structure and breathing space trying breaking down your answer with words like “first,” “then,” and “lastly.”
  • Dodge Ball: Sometimes you will not have a good answer, so it would be wiser to dodge the question and re-direct your answer cleverly elsewhere. If you are asked about B2B sales and you only have experience in B2C sales, you might redirect your answer to talk about the transferability of your skills.
  • Fall Back: Sometimes you simply will not have an answer and you will no amount of Transitional Adverbs or dodge ball will help. So, tell them you are not yet familiar with the concept, but you are eager to learn. Sometimes it will work because it will give them an opportunity to mold you.
