The Process Engineer, also named Chemical Engineer, designs, operates, controls, and optimizes physical processes. He supervises biochemical and physical processes, develops new industrial processes, designs new process plants and equipment, and modifies existing ones. He also takes on a responsibility for the operation of machinery types, that transform raw materials into products. The primary responsibilities of the Process Engineers include developing new industrial processes and designing new process plants and equipment. They also constantly modify the existing ones. For the Process or Chemical Engineer, the most important skill is thorough, working knowledge of chemistry, as well as biochemical and physical processes. They also have to have a professional aptitude for chemistry. Good numeracy skills and analytical skills are a must, too. In addition, high technical and analytical skills, creativity, accuracy and organization are also important. Like other professionals, Process Engineers should work well under pressure. Having commercial awareness is also an advantage. Good problem-solving skills and sound decision-making skills are also required. Since many people are involved in the development of a project, Process Engineers should be able to work productively and amicably in teams, where everyone’s opinion matters.
You can become employed as a Process Engineer, if you have a relevant degree and, through a different route, if you do not. The required degree in this vocation is a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, and mechanical engineering, or biotechnology engineering. If you want to advance in your career and become chartered, receive the CEng status with the Engineering Council, add to your bachelor’s degree an appropriate master’s degree in engineering or technology or a doctorate accredited by a professional engineering institution. High grades are preferable.
If you do not hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees, you still can be employed as a Process Engineer. Look for employers who offer apprenticeship programs. Some employers allow their employees to gain experience in engineering by providing vocational work, industrial placements, and sponsorship. By gaining work experience as a Process Engineer, you will be able to perform your duties as professionally as qualified engineers do.
